This is great, Currygirl. So many people are being refused treatment, or just left to rot on waiting lists. Not always easy I know, but try to concentrate on how exciting it will be to pain free after the op. Until 5th April try to distance if you are out, or if people come to visit and you should be fine. And they will look after you well in the special high care unit - that's what they are there for! Good luck :) :)

I understand it must be scary, Currygirl, but you’ll be looked after very carefully on the HCU, and with your new knee you’ll be able to exercise and keep your pf as stable as possible. Easy for me to say this, but try and set your sights on the pain free future, say around mid-May when it’s really Spring, warm weather & you can get out & about. You sound very depressed (takes one to spot one!) so I hope you’re getting help with that. Chronic illness IS very depressing and this long winter isn’t helping

My friend has just had knee op. She has done physio exercises religiously and has improved so much. Is back to work today. Many people don’t t do exercises enough so continue in pain for longer.

Hope all goes well for you.

That's such good news! 😊 Know you will be nervous and scared about procedure but you have sooo much to gain! Least of all no pain. You will be well looked after on HDU, specialist staff all the way. You will also have time to ask questions of surgeon/anaesthetist to allay your fears.

Dad had both knees replaced in his eighties, being a miner he crawled through seams 2 feet high. If he hadn't had them done he would be in a wheelchair by now. As I tell him now just as well he did cause I ain't got enough puff to push a wheelchair around! 😤

So currygirl I wish you good luck. We will be all thinking about you. Kind regards. Dawn.xx

What good news for you, I am awaiting date for knee op,had pre assessment done last week but they do not like my peak flow scores or blood pressure so monitor for 2 weeks then decide but I am still bricking it due to lungs

Hi BOXER AD when I had my preopassment my breathing tests were low I think it may be done by spinal injection x

Yes they suggested an epidural but had a call from hospital this morning taken me off waiting list for 6 months due to blood count issues now 🤔🤯

Hi currygirl, glad your op is going ahead, my knee surgeon is not happy to go ahead because I take Nintedanib, he says it will affect my healing and may result in several operations because I’m at high risk of infections My Respiratory consultant disagrees with this so I have to wait for them to have a MDM about me to see if he can go ahead with it. Good luck and get it done!

Hi Currygirl, I understand your worries, the waiting is almost the hardest bit because you have time to think about it all. But once it's over you can concentrate on enjoying the benefits. Take care & good luck xxxx

Good news! I understand your worries and sympathise. I've had three major abdominal surgeries in the last few years but each has involved loooong discussions with the anaesthetist. The surgeon said he's 'just' the mechanic, the anaesthetist keeps the patient pain free and alive! Each time a ccu bed was insisted upon. This did lead to several cancellations but was only used following the last op. As others have said, focus on after the op and the mobility and freedom of pain. Also, I know knee replacements can be done without general anaesthetic, is this an option?

That’s good news. Try to see the high dependency unit as a positive it means they’ve singled you out for vip treatment. Good luck with it all.

You are bound to be nervous and afraid its a normal reaction. I try not to think about things too much beforehand as it makes me worse, so I now have a saying that i wont think about it until i am in the chair and have been lucky so far this has worked well for me. Try to get involved in a good book or a nice film to take your mind off things. I know its hard but will be well worth it in the end. Will be thinking of you x

I am having my knee replacement on April 6th. I have COPD and was assured everything will go well. I am anxious about having surgery but know I won't have the severe pain once healed.... will work hard in PT!! I have not been able to do my long walks or do stairs due to my knee. I was to have the surgery on March 1st but pulled a back muscle practicing putting on the post surgical compression stockings. I was so down in the dumps having to postpone the surgery. Good luck with your surgery and we will have to check in with each other after our surgery!
