Hi Due to a significant increase in breathlessness I recently had a pet scan on my lungs which showed a nodule in my windpipe that requires a broncostomy to check if it's cancerous.Has anyone had a broncostomy on their lungs and was it particularly painful or uncomfortable or was it fairly straight forward Many Thanks Mike B

Broncostomy

I've had a few bronchoscopies. They usually mildly sedate you and it contains a memory blocker.they take good care of you and usually wash lungs snd take some samples.hope it works out well for you
I have had 2 in my time. One with sedation and one without. Take the sedation route as you then can't remember it.Good luck and take care. Linda
if they offer sedative - HAVE IT - makes things so much easier. You'll feel woozy for a few hours afterwards. Oh, and expect a sore throat for a day or two, paracetamol will help. X
Many thanks for your reply I'm a bit terrified of having this ,but replies have given me a bit more confidence. Mike
Hello,
Nodules aren’t uncommon and if the consultant is concerned then they will keep an eye on things.
Bronchoscopy -it is normal to be a bit anxious about it, although as others have said take the sedation they offer and all will be well.
I had one nearly 20 years ago with a lung irrigation at the same time. I don’t remember a thing about it.
Go well
Pauline
I had one and once I had the memory blocker didn’t remember a thing. They had trouble finding a vein
i had one about 5 years ago. I was very worried but it was quick and totally painless. I was mildly sedated and didn't feel a thing. No soreness afterwards either. Good luck.

I had one years ago. They told me I had to be conscious for the procedure and they would just give me a mild sedative to relax me. I woke up some little time later remembering nothing, so as far as my experience went, it was a doddle. Hope it goes well for you, I'm sure there's nothing to worry about. xx
Hi,I have a fluid filled cyst that they want to check, it's 19mm long.
I'm also due to have a bronchoscopy in a couple of weeks time so I've been interested in the answers to your question. I have asked to be sedated, to be honest I'm a bit of a wimp anyway with these sorts of things so I doubt I would be able to get through it without.
The consultant said it will only take around four minutes but four minutes is a long time without sedation.
Good luck!
Go with the sedation, as it's hard not to cough. Stick to your guns and have sedation. As you say 4 minutes is a long time and when someone tells you.not to cough, you want to cough.Hope you get on OK. Take care. Linda
Many thanks for your reply you sound very apprehensive like me, let's hope it goes well. Answers have been encouraging.Good luck for the future. Mike
Hi, I had a nodule on my right lung, Dr ordered a Pet Scan which showed I had a nodule on my Left Lung also - No broncostomy but am scanned every year to be sure it's not grown. Good luck but Nodules are often none malignant.
Many thanks for reply apparently they said my nodule was warm so I need a confirmation of what it is. Plus I think it's affecting my breathing which was already not brilliant.Good luck for the future Mike
I had a bronchoscopy with lavage last year and had the sedation. I was able to watch what the camera was showing on the monitor. It wasn’t painful as they also sprayed my throat with something to numb it. I could hear myself coughing and spluttering but felt very detached from it all. Afterwards, my lungs felt the best they’d felt since before I got ill (at least for a day or two) and my throat felt like I’d swallowed a ball of barbed wire. But it was a very necessary procedure which was professionally conducted. Good luck with everything.
Good luck mikebaker1949 ..take whatever they offer you ... hopefully painless and you won't remember a thing !
