I have begun Doxycycline rescue pack. Is it ok to continue with Azithromycin?

I have begun the rescue pack. Should I continue taking my three times a week Azithromycin? Or not take it whilst taking the Doxycycline?

Advice please, especially from those with experience of taking Azithromycin etc.

BIG thank you for all who replied to my previous question concerning the saline nebuliser solution.

It is a comfort to be able to chat with people who understand my problems and anxieties.

Thank you.

Hi, I remember Pete stopping Azithromycin when he took Doxycycline but others might say something else. Wishing you well. Xxx

I've just had a 7 day course of Doxycycine and I stopped my Azithromycin.

Hi there: I thought the course of Doxycycline was 10 days? I think I would rather it be 7 days, it it did the trick. But my G P issued 10 days. Best wishes.

It should be 10 - 14 days for those of us with Bronchiectasis. I need to educate my GP. There is a letter on my file from my consultant, and the respiratory nurse was supposed to have flagged it up on my record but I was so unwell when I saw the GP it didn't register that I should check how long she'd given me.

I was given 7 days of Amoxicillin, 3 x 500 a day, which certainly helped. I have just been prescribed Doxycycline 1 x 100 a day for 7 days to hopefully sort it out. I was told to take a 24-hour break between finishing the Amoxicillin and starting the Doxycycline, which I will start today. Unfortunately, all done over the phone. I think my GP is waiting for my appointment with the Respiratory consultant comes through, I have been waiting since August 22. Anyway, thank you for the 10-14 days recommendation. It seems I too have to educate my GP, either that or photoshop a few degrees and become Dr. Bob. Take care.

Teddyd: Sorry spelled your name wrongly. The computer seems to have a mind of its own and so need to doubly check everything!

I’ve been told different things at various times by doctors! They’re different classes of drugs so taking them together won’t hurt you, but as they’re both broad spectrum you shouldn’t need to & might increase the likelihood of side effects. I agree with the others, you should have a minimum of 10 days

Hello. I would say when it comes to medication we can tell you our experience with it, but we are not doctors nor are we chemists. It is more advisable to confirm this with the doctor or chemist who prescribed this for you. We simply are not qualified to advise you on how to take your medication. Best wishes. 🙂👋

My rescue pack is amoxicillin and I carry on taking my prophylactic antibiotics as instructed by all my GPs and consultants. I suggest you ask them as it may be different for everyone.

I think you should clear this with your GP Doxicyclin is a good antibiotic but l am not sure it will sit well with any other version.

Consultant always tells me to continue as its being used as a prophylactic drug & shouldn't interact.💕

you should definitely stop the azithromycin while on another antibiotic...start again as soon as you have stopped the other.

hi there….stop the Azithromycin as you are taking a course of Doxycycline and restart them when you have completed the course. The Aziththromycin is given to help prevent an infection. Get well soon x

since I started 3x a week Azithromycin (500mg) I’ve only had one chest infection - in 5+ years, and I was told by my gp to stop taking the azithromycin while I was taking the Doxycycline.

Hi, I was told to take both together. Best person to ask would be a Pharmacist. They have far more knowledge than GPS about Drug interactions.

Hi, I’ve just taken a course of Doxycycline for a sinus infection and the GP advised me to stop my Azithromycin for the duration of the course. Hope you start to feel better soon.

Hi. I would make a telephone call to your surgery and ask for a telephone appointment with either the duty doctor or pharmacist. The pharmacist at a GP's surgery are called independent prescribing pharmacists. I would not seek advice from a high street pharmacist as most have not had the extra training required to prescribe. Good luck!

Oh dear. There seem to be conflicting opinions on this. i should go with the majority until you can get in touch with one of your own medical people.
