Hi guys

Thanks for your support in my last post, just had my xray results back and they were clear, normal I was convinced I had hyperinflated lungs, my story goes like this I suffer from health anxiety anyways I guess the reason why my anxiety is off the scale is because my nan died of emphysema, my dad had emphysema and I'm convinced I have, the only thing is my family basically smoked for 50 odd years I have to thank my lucky stars that I randomly had a spirometry test with work as the job I was doing at the time and they picked up early obstruction if I remember at the time my fev1/fvc was 72% so for someone the same age and height ect it should of been 76% my fev1 was 96% & fvc was 113% so I went to my doctors that same week and that was when my anxiety really kicked me in the Teath he was a horrible doctor I had a print out of my results and I wanted to show him he didn't even want to hold the test results and from where I was standing there was no way he could see them his words were that's emphysema if you don't give up now you will be dead in 10 years time that was the gospel truth, so I hope you can see why I was and very much to a certain degree very anxious I continued to smoke for 4 more years I just could give up there was to much happening I was getting married, we were going through Ivf, and buying a house all in 2016 so I needed them fags I new I had to give up soon 2019 I repeated the spirometry at my doctors surgery and this time it had obviously changed my fev1/fvc was 64% my fev1 was 91% & fvc was 109 that was it there and then fags in bin not even a vape it was cold turkey for me I repeated the spirometry 5 months later after 5 months no fags and my figures increased to fev1/fvc of 68% fev1 of 93% & fvc was 109% that was my last spirometry In 2019 since 2016 till now really I've been obsessive with my lungs googling all the time every thing freaking me out I have 2 very supportive doctors and the nurses at blf have been absolutely fantastic with me and every single professional have said you havant got copd you are bourder line my doctors have said they don't think there is any damage to my lungs I gave up at the right time in life and I'm pretty much on the safe side of this, my doctors & my respiratory physio have recently said that my hiatus hernia is driving my breathless feeling and it's triggering dysfunctional breathing my physio watch the way I breath and she says it's dysfunctional breath and she also said I'm that mild with copd that she could pull someone in off the streets and my lungs would probably be no different to there's that's all I can share right now my jorney continues seeing the gastroligist Monday and on the 28th of November I will be doing a hydrogen blow test to rule out lactose and bacteria growths ect and I've been also referred to see the respiratory team at hospital just to see if they can reasure me my doctor hasn't requested spirometry test with them because she is very confident after seeing my 3 previous spirometry and the fact that ive never had a chest infection or no cough that it's more so dysfunctional breathing she does believe I would blow a normal reading I have to take heed from this. One last thing that horrible doctor has been struck off several other reasons

Take care xx

Thanks for sharing all this with us. Well done for giving up the cigs. Like you, my father went cold turkey after his first heart attack and never had another one. After smoking for over 50 years, it took will power but he did it and so have you. It will have improved the health of your lungs no end.

Like you, I also have a hiatus hernia. Even though I take Lansoprazol twice a day for it, I still suffer with acid reflux. Despite my best efforts, it sometimes creeps into my lungs (known as silent reflux) and can irritate them. Sometimes this causes breathlessness and can also lead to chest infection.

Many people live long and happy lives despite having a hiatus hernia. It is a very common condition.

There is good advice available regarding managing it which you should have already been given by a doctor or nurse. If not, there's plenty to be found online.

I won't try and write it all here as it would take too much space, but basically it's about watching what you eat and drink, maintaining a healthy weight and not eating or drinking before going to bed. Also, raise the head of your bed if you can as gravity stops the acid flowing upwards.

Great news that you have kicked the emphysema back into touch. If you can learn to manage the hernia, you'll soon be flying high again.

Xx Moy

And well done for stopping smoking, not easy as I know - it took me several goes before I managed it.

Well done for stopping smoking, we have all been there and come through it. I hope you dont mind me saying it, but you really now need to stop googling as you are just feeding your anxiety. Once you have the results from gastroentology you can relax and enjoy life, good luck x
