is this a chest infection?

I have severe COPD. Over the past 2 weeks I have become severely breathless and with slightest exertion my oxygen levels drop to mid 80s. I have normal temperature and no cough though when I clear my throat I do have green sputum. My chest is very tight. Could this be a chest infection? Will try for GP appointment tomorrow- just wondered if anyone has had similar.

You’re writing as though this is unusual for you, and you’re finding your breathing much worse than normal with lowered O2.

If you have a rescue pack of steroids and antibiotics, I would suggest this might be a good occasion to use it, especially given you have some green mucus, and your other symptoms.

If you look at some recent threads there’s one all about having pneumonia without realising - I’m not saying it’s that, but sometimes we are much more ill than we realise.

Definitely phone first thing and get an urgent appointment to see your GP tomorrow.

In the meantime I’d also suggest trying NHS 111 today and speak to them to see what they suggest given your symptoms.

Thank you so much. Will take your advice - hadn’t realised about pneumonia so needs investigating.

Sounds like an infection is brewing and having mucus that is green could be a sign or just hay-fever a sample should be checked for infection and your oxygen levels sound low so you need a gp or nurse to check you over

Hi, sorry you are not feeling as good as usual.

With your oxygen sats so low then it would be wise to see your GP today. Hope that is possible for you.

You could also speak to your oxygen nurse ?

Hope you you feel better very soon.

Go well

will try to get GP appointment today. Unfortunately I don’t have the benefit of an oxygen nurse though I know others who do 🤷‍♀️

Goodness me. I have a review of my oxygen requirement every year by the local oxygen health service. You don't have that ?

Yes please try and see your GP today. Tell then it is urgent and tell them your oxygen levels as well. They should act quickly for you.

Put a sample of sputum into your surgery. I hope you keep a stock of sample pots?
