Hi fellow sufferers/ strivers, I have had bronchiectasis since childhood with endless chest infections getting more frequent with age (75) This week my consultant asked if I wanted try nebulised Tobramycin so here I go with trepidation. Has anyone tried this medication? Take care all. Marlbee

With the caveat that I’m not medically qualified. Nebulised tobi is a treatment given when a particular bacteria called pseudomonas is causing a problem, or thought to be causing a problem. It’s used almost as a topical treatment, helping to control the bacteria levels on the surface of the lung and reduce the number of infections/exacerbations that way. It won’t treat an active, symptomatic chest infection, but it’s a good maintenance treatment for in between flares, and many people that are on it use it without any issues or side effects.

Thank you Charlie, that is reassuring to know most people get on with it ok. My Consultant thinks the issue is pseudomonas that is the problem. If this doesn’t work plus oral Augmenting then The Doc suggests I may need IVS. So I’m hoping this works. Kind of you to reply. Marlybee.

Have they given you an oral antibiotic called ciprofloxacin? Unfortunately, pseudomonas can be difficult to treat, partly because cipro is the only oral drug we currently have that can properly treat it. Augmentin won’t touch pseudo at all due to innate resistance, and if you have signs of an active infection, that needs to be dealt with first before the Tobi nebs will be of any use. Some people can’t tolerate cipro, or have a resistant pseudo strain, in which case doxycycline may sometimes be given, but that has very limited effect. If cipro is no good, IVs are usually the only other option, but if they haven’t tried that (and assuming there’s no medical reason you can’t have it), that’s what you need to be asking them to try.

Thank you again Charlie G. The augmentin is for the bug klebciela pneumoniae that is growing but my specialist senses that I have pseudomonas too which has grown previously. Over the years I have taken ciprofloxacin with less effectiveness unfortunately. Not a drug that suits me as I become quite depressed when taking it but I still take it if advised to do so. I think Tobramycin is my “ last chance saloon” Hopefully I won’t need IVs yet some of which I am allergic to. Marlybee.

Sorry to butt in Reading4, I just want to ask Charlie - how are you? And how’s your daughter doing these days?

Hello. I know that Tobramycin may cause ear and balance issues if given “intravenously”. I think this phenomenon is called Ototoxicity. I hope the medication will not cause you any adverse effects
