i have had Bronchiectasis for many years. Recently i was given an Aerobika to try to loosen mucus in lungs. I have not had much success with it. Does anyone have any hints on how to have more success?

Hi GinnyMa, I have one as well, but find it makes me dizzy/light headed so only use it occasionally. But I know some people find them very helpful.

I bought a Aerobika recently as I have COPD and found that it has really helped me.

Hi, I've had one for years, have you seen the physio about using it? They will give you exercise to do with it not just sitting up with it.

Hi I use an acapella device not aerobika and have been so much better since using it

Do you use it sitting up or lying down? I find it very hard to shift any mucus in an upright position, with or without the Aerobika device, but when I lie down it's much easier. Are you using the active breathing method, which I know as breathe in for 3 seconds, hold your breath for 3 seconds then breathe out slowly for 12 seconds, like you're playing a recorder?

HiI’ve been using the Aerobika for about 6 months and find it helpful

sitting up I do several big belly breaths first ..then about 10 aerobica breaths which seems to loosen the mucus

Then I lie on my side ( my right side mostly as my left lung is most damaged) and try to breathe up the mucus gradually using autogenic drainage.

I’ll also use the aerobica when on my side if it’s not expelling easily. Are you on carbocysteine or NAC which thins mucus making it easier to expel?

Hi GinnyMa - I have an Aerobika and definitely find it helpful, but we're all different. I have v. severe COPD and find it very difficult to clear my chest sometimes. I take carbocisteine too. I start with a good glug of water, then a combination of the aerobika at level 4 and pursed lip breathing (then a huff) usually does the trick. Best of luck with it x

I'm sorry the AeroBika isn't working for you. I found mine very helpful when I was really bad. It may be that a different device would work better for you. Perhaps some of the advice people have given you would help. I hope so. xx

Hi GinnyMaI was changed over to the Aerobika from a PAP device. It is a bit easier to use. I use it lying down on each side. My mucus clearance depends on when I’ve eaten, what I’ve eaten and is best before my evening meal. The physio and professional staff seem to find that unusual. I can’t clear mucus upright. I will be trying carbicysteine too to help thin the mucus. It is all quite difficult in my case and sometimes tiring but very important to do the clearance exercises given to you every day as it has to be cleared to prevent infection, as I’m sure you know. All the best x

Hi Ginny Ma, have the physios shown you how to use the Aerobika? Ie breathe in and hold for count of three and then slowly and gently blow out. You need to do at least a hundred of these but every ten slowly blow out to try and cough up sputum. Do this while 1. Sitting up for 20 then the same whilst lying on both sides and back. I now use hypertonic saline nebulised to loosen mucous. It works for me. Good luck Marlybee.
