I had a bad day yesterday with severe breathlessness and palpitations which didn’t stop overnight, so am now in my favourite place in all the world (not) Southmead Hospital in Bristol. Not only that I amin the acute frailty unit! Only bed available - or perhaps that’s how they now describe me!

Oh dear…. Sorry to hear that but it is the best place to be and I think— unless I have got your tangled history wrong — you have been well cared for by your cardiologist? 🤔 And thank you very much for telling us. Lots of love and the gentlest of hugsK xxx
I hope things improve for you so you can go home soon. Sending you lots of good wishes 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑
Hope u soon feel better xxx
Best wishes to you Carnival. Hope you will soon be well enough to go home xx
Sorry you are in hospital, as to acute frailty unit. When we first used computers, I looked for the code for "elderly frail" given to older people, where we did not know the exact diagnosis, but they needed help (I now think of me as "rusting at the edges".) I was told we were now no longer allowed to use the term frail, oh well everything goes and comes round again.
I was described as “frail” by my GP practice. Apparently there is a frailty scale which I accessed on line. I did not come up with enough ticks. I took the matter up with the practice manager. She said there would be support for such patients, taxis were mentioned. Are they free? I left the frailty dx on my record to see what benefits might pop up. Nothing yet.Kxx
I have also been diagnosed as frail,I don't think so, I still bath, and feed and dress myself.Nothing frail about that.I take a small walk in the late afternoon. What is the scale on frailty?
Ragrug
It’s called the Electronic Frailty Index (EFI). I managed to get it online. It has a lot of questions. I think it is quite new. I was not happy that I was being diagnosed with something but at no point was I consulted. It turns out that it scans our records electronically and picks out a variety of conditions and adds them up. I was picked up as having COPD. ??? How? Who diagnosed that??? Not happy about it. You can have it removed. I left it so I could see if the “benefits” materialised. Not yet. Waste of NHS but cui bono? Apart from the bright IT guy who devised it and is now garnering a small fortune in consultancy fees.
Gah, it’s just words. Like calling first-time mothers over 30 “elderly primigravidas” 🙄
Hurry up out of there 😘
My daughter was 37 when she had her youngest son and was classed as “elderly.” What utter rubbish and very demeaning I think. Hope you’re as well as you can be Hanne. 😘💜
Thanks Carole. Same to you (Pete too, of course.) Yup, still stumbling on 😘
I was elderly when I had my elder son at 32! Must have been positively ancient when I had my second son at 36! I was twice the age of the girl in the next bed. They still haven’t found a reason for my extreme breathlessness, having a scan this afternoon.
Thank you everyone for your good wishes, I will let you know how I get on. xx
Stay there as long as you need Carnival to get yourself sorted and then mossey on home when you are stable and happy to do so.Best wishes Ski's and Scruff's
😊😻 x
So sorry to hear that Carnival hope they manage to sort things out for you. Sending you hugs and best wishes
Very sorry to hear this Carnival. 😞 I do hope though that you are getting steadily better. Sending love and a gentle hug. xx 💕
I was described as frail years ago when admitted to hospital , even frailer now …ha ha .
My second child was born at Southmead, nearly 50 years ago, it used to be a chest hospital I believe …..two bed rooms with big French windows on one wall .
Best wishes for a speedy recovery .
Hope you're soon getting better, Carnival, and can escape from the frailty ward. Virtual hugs and good vibes. xxx
I hope you are feeling very much today Carnival and can soon go home.xxx
Hope you’re feeling better soon. Hopefully you’re being looked after well and will soon be well and strong enough to go home. 🤗x
Oh, those blooming palpitations! Aren't they awful when they won't stop? I've had a number of trips to A&E recently due to the same issue, but mine usually settle down after an hour and don't go on all night.
As for 'frail', I was referred to the Department for the Frail and Elderly' last year when I was only 69! At the time, I was was definitely not 'frail'! I just spontaneously fell backwards from time to time and it needed investigating. It WAS investigated by said department and they couldn't find a reason so they discharged me! I still fall backwards every couple of months or so. Do I still qualify as 'frail and elderly'? I'm 70 now so perhaps I do. I certainly feel like it at the moment but no one is rushing to do anything for me. Lol!
I do hope they get you sorted out and home again soon! xx Moy
Hopefully you be better soon than go home. Just rest and don't stress yourself out I know no one like hospital. I got bronchiectasis and out of breath and my chest hurts when I get like this I know I got chest infection. Get well soon xx

Hello Carnival. Very sorry to hear you had to go to hospital. I hope you can have a visitor? Keep your spirits up and think of the time when you can come home. When I was in hospital at the end of May the staff was very caring. Talk to your nurses if you feel a bit low. With my very best wishes for a prompt recovery. Zephir.
