What is the best antibiotic for asthma/ Bronchiectasis? Is Doxycycline better than Amoxicillin,? I know that a 14 day course is necessary with Amoxicillin, what would the course be for Doxycycline?All answers greatly received.. Thank you to all my kind & knowledgeable friends..Primrose123..x

I have been treated with both antibiotics and for 14 days for both. My gp believes that the doxycycline is a more effective antibiotic and together with steroids will improve things. Although he also warned me that doxycycline likely to make me feel quite unwell with side effects and it does ☹️Sadly is not unusual for me to require several courses of antibiotics and steroids.

Augmentin500/125 is my favourite but always have Doxycycline in my stock as well. Personally find Amoxicillin on its own to be useless.

I must say that amoxicillin has never ever worked for me how ever many weeks I was given in the past. Most of the regular other ones work far better (for me) including doxycyline.

When I need antibiotics for an infection I always ask the GP what they're offering, when they say "amoxicillin is our 1st line of defence" I just politely say "would you mind giving me something else please because amoxy has never worked for me". Luckily its always worked. My wretched new GP since I moved refuses to allow me a rescue pack grrr. He has at least, agreed to allow me winter Azithromycin November to April and that's saved me as that's always usually been my time for infections. Bless you too my dear 🤗

My gp refused me and said that the surgery now doesnt give rescue packs unless you have severe copd, so if I fall ill at the weekend I have to wait until the Monday or go to A & E, crazy and there is nothing I can do about it x

Always be sureto visit the hospital immediate upon symptons of a flare up. Don't wait over a weekend. Advise the hospital doc of your gps failure to follow nice guidelines and hence your needto visit the hospital. That should sort it

There isn’t a best ab for the condition of bronchiectasis Primrose. It would depend on the bacteria you are growing at the time and what Ab the bacteria is sensitive to. The guidelines state that for bronch a sample is sent off but an antibiotic is started. This is a best guess basically but if you have a pattern of eg HI or Strep P, then it is likely you will be prescribed the ab which kicked your bugs ass in the past. They should also be a high dose and for 14 days. When the results come back you will know it’s correct or needs to be changed. UsUally pseudo is my bugbear and I can only have IVs but I also have a supply of both Augmentin and Doxy as I can grow most of the usual culprits.Cx

Cof drop's description is spot on Primrose. Also, Generally for the bugs which we bronchs get, amoxycillin is about as useful as a packet of smarties.

I find that doxycycline seems to be effective at getting rid of more bugs than amoxicillin. I don’t rate amoxicillin when it comes to lung infections if you’re prone to them especially if you’ve got bronchiectasis.

Hi primrose 123,I generally prefer amoxicillin as it depends on what the bug is growing and doxycycline does tend to keep me busy in the bathroom but both help so it depends on what you can tolerate .🙃

Hi Primrose. I have an allergic reaction to Doxycycline so am always given Amoxicillin. It has always worked for me but I don't have Bronchiectasis. Good luck. John

My consultant has asked for me to alternate Amoxycillin and Doxycycline. Also, he prescribes Doxy for me to take from November to April every year as I cannot have azithromycin. If I have a flare up, I have the antibiotics for 2 weeks (min). I sometimes have to have several different ones before the bug gets the message! The most effective one I have ever had is Clarithromycin which saw off a particularly stubborn infection. I've only had it once in my life which may explain why it was so effective. xx Moy

i had clarithromycin once about 20 odd years ago when i had pnumonia in a & e it was a new drug then & i bwas given it intravenosly but my arm suddenly felt inflamed & the doctor gave me an antidote straight away & said to never take again as i was allergic to it ! so have no idea how effective it is - only not for me !

Depends on which infection you get- you should take a sample of sputum to get tested. Amoxicillin is still widely used but whatever you do get it done straight away, as soon as you can. Salt water in a nebuliser helps and Air Physio - a device that helps you clear mucus from airways helps too - good luck

[Lutontown]

Antibiotics don't treat asthma, and it depends what the bug is to say what is the right antibiotic to sort your infection. Put a sputum sample into your surgery. (Hope you keep a small stock of sputum pots). This may take a week or more for the hospital to name the bug and recommend an antibiotic. If you don't have a bug, the hospital will know in about 3 days. The GP may put you on either Amoxicillin or Doxycycline to start with, but change you to the one the hospital suggests when known. If the bug turns out to be Staphylococcus Aureus, you may need a course of intravenous AB.

Hi primrose it all depends if they culture a particular bacteria. Also some people can’t tolerate some antibiotics. I find the doxycycline uncomfortable with terrible reflux so tend to stick to different antibiotics.

Hi primrose123, I normally begin with a script for Doxyclycline and if that doesn't do the trick the doctor has the results of my sputum test by the end of the week and she normally gives me a week of Amoxiclav which normally puts me right. My emergency antibiotic is Clarithromycin if that helps. Take care, Maximonkey

I find that Amoxicillin just dont work for me and the last few times it has been Doxycycline that worked quite well, although the last infection I had the ent surgeon put me on a low dose for 6 weeks, which worked even better. I think it depends in the bug which antibiotic they put you on. Hope you find the right thing for you x

[Bardear]

I have had Doxycycline for 7 days and Prednisolone for 5 days as a rescue Pack for many years, Over the years the Doxycycline seemed to have lost it's potency.

I have since been changed to Cefalexin 250mgm four times a day (pretty powerful stuff) for 7 days along with Prednisolone (steroid) 5mgs x 6 tablets a day for 5 days.

Cefalexin works like magic for me as by the second day I feel so much better and they work very well with the steroid.

I think it depends on the individual, I once had Doxycycline and it did absolutely nothing for me at all so I was then given Amoxicillin which worked. I didn't have any side effects from Doxycyline, it was like I hadn't taken anything at all but within days of taking the Amoxicillin I could feel it beginning to work. I think it is just trial and error. xx

[Scrutari]

My respiratory consultant advises 21 days ciprofloxacin and to alternate for the next attack with 21 days doxycycline. These are prescribed as by my GP so I have both in reserve. Recently after 14 days cipro the symptoms appeared to ease so I stopped the antibiotic and the condition rebounded after a week and I had to complete a further 21 days on doxy. I learned a hard lesson. For me, 14 days is too short.
