Recall of some Philips Respironics PPE equipment

This is to alert people to the fact that in Canada and US (possibly also EU) some units from Philips Respironics PPE equipment are being recalled due to possible health concerns related to disintegration of the sound abatement foam (polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR)) used inside the units to dampen the noise. They indicate that it may be a health hazard to continue using the affected machines. They also indicate that Ozone could contribute to the disintegration...so those using SoClean should be aware of this.

My Philips dreamstation auto cpap machine is among those being recalled. There is no indication given as to how long it may be before the machines are recalled and repaired. I have therefore purchased a ResMed AirSense™ 10 AutoSet™ CPAP.

Yes spotted this in Respiratory Futures news last week I did post but likely not everyone would have seen it. Good to repost.

It looks like Philips Resprionics are going to be subject to a Class Action Lawsuit,prnewswire.com/news-release...

I use a ResMed Lumis ST-A 150 bilevel machine and strangely enough, my elderly next door neighbour uses a Philips Resprionics Dream Station 1 BiPAP machine and couple of months ago she called at our house, because for no apparent reason she had been given the same ResMed machine I use for her Sleep Apnoea, she also suffers from Dementia so she told them to swap it back, because of her Dementia she doesn’t like change.

I’m now wondering if this was done because of this Philips Resprionics foam problem, I know she doesn’t use a So Clean or any other O3 cleaner, so she should be safe from that point of view, but I do worry about what to do for the best.

I would think you are right, that it was done for the foam problem. What age is she? I suggest that because she has dementia and doesn't like change, she may have difficulty using the ResMed. So, it may be best for her to continue useing the Philips Respironics BiPAP.

The Class Action Lawsuit Against Philips sounds very interesting!

Hi Exbury1905, I think she is 83 and yes because she doesn’t like change, when it happened I couldn’t understand why they just changed her over to a ResMed machine, I know they both use different algorithms so it would be difficult for her.

I know here in the UK they would normally take you in hospital to change machines over, obviously we’re governed by Covid-19 protocols at the moment, but to change the machine to completely different make and model did seem very strange indeed.

I hope the Class Action Lawsuit succeeds, it seems very strange that Philips Resprionics have introduced a new machine just at the same time as they’ve recalled the old machines and by all accounts the new models are extremely flimsy and cheaply made.

It’s almost like Philips Resprionics are trying to save money because they know are going to be screwed when it goes to court.

Hi Ian 1967, so she's at an age when change is difficult, particularity with dementia as an added factor...very difficult. I too hope that the Class Action Lawsuit succeeds. I have had my dreamstation for about three years and decided, as soon as I heard the news about Respironics, I ordered a new CPAP machine. I now have the AirSense10 Autoset CPAP and tonight will be the first time of use...no sense in waiting and getting sicker...I've had respiratory problems for several years and they have not been getting better. Health is more important than money but I'd like (dream on) to get something back from Philips.

Cheers,
