I don’t understand if your consultant has advised you use a nebuliser, then the hospital would normally let you have one on permanent loan. The Equipment Pool at the hospital I attend change it annually, along with 4 packs of tubing, cups etc and you can choose masks or mouthpieces. You might want to check this out with them.
A ‘session’ lasts until the medication has run out and is dependant on what medication you are prescribed.
If for some reason you have to purchase your own nebuliser then please make sure you fill in the Medical VAT Exemption form.
I have been using a nebulizer since being diagnosed with bronchiectasis 5 years ago. It is supplied by the nhs hospital I attend. I return it annually to be overhauled and for maintenance and I am given another one in return.
If you live in the UK I believe this is standard practise.
I own an Omron NE-C28P and I'm very happy with it. It takes around 10 minutes to nebulise one Ventolin 2.5mg + one Saline-Steri-Neb 2.5ml capsule. I only use it when I'm feeling very congested and it does help a little with clearing my lungs but doesn't relieve the tightness in my chest. Maybe that's because I have severe emphysema? If you've been prescribed anything else such as Ipratropium bromide, it can't be used alongside certain inhalers, so check with your pharmacist if in any doubt.
I was originally provided with a nebuliser several years ago by the hospital when I had pneumonia and they sent me home on supported early-discharge. No-one mentioned anything about it being on permanent loan or getting it serviced. Unfortunately the next time I was instructed by the hospital to use a nebuliser it had stopped working, so I bought my own (VAT free) from Evergreen Nebulisers and returned the original to the hospital.
I use the Philips nebuliser for which I paid £59.00. A doctor prescribes the saline. After using the nebuliser I do postural drainage for a further 35 minutes three times a day. Quite an ordeal. I lie down with the bed propped up higher for my feet.I get a blockage quite often in the left lung and keep huffing and grunting for some time when I have finished. A real nuisance, for me and my wife. Any solutions?
