Blood thinners

One week ago I ended up in hospital with a clot in my lung. I’ve been put on blood thinners and will be on these for 6 months. Can anyone tell me if they are left feeling very tired and weak, and if so how long does this last for. I am also extremely breathless, I do have copd and bronciectasis and seem to have palpitations as well.

I live alone and find I am anxious just now. I would appreciate any feedback thank you

I had a massive pulmonary embolism eighteen months ago. It caused damage to my heart resulting in Atrial Fibrillation. "Catch 22" as they don't know if the Afib actually caused the PE or the PE caused the Afib. It took at least six months to get any sort of energy back. Cardioversion failed after three days. I am now breathless a lot of the time on little exertion and am being tested for heart failure. On blood thinners for life. If you haven't had any cardio checks yet good idea to push for some. As you already have lung conditions presumably your pulmonary doctors will be keeping a regular check on you. Be patient, pulmonary embolism recovery is long haul not quick fix - unfortunately!

I think your tiredness is bound to be the result of your recent ordeal. You are bound to feel anxious that would be perfectly natural I should say under the circumstances.

Just be very kind to yourself and relax in allowing your body to heal and recover.

Please do chat with your doctor about your concerns, and especially so if the palpitations are increasing or worrying you.

Anything you can't manage at home, shopping, meds etc, check in with Adult Care at your local council and or perhaps chat with Age UK for further support.

Thank you so much for your kind words and I will certainly try to take your advice

I’ve had COPD for 8 years and in June my heart rate went up to over 150 (have an iwatch) on one day and 160 two days later playing crown green bowls - not the most energetic of sports. Went to the GP for an ECG and at that time my heart beat was all over the place. Went to hospital directly and was diagnosed with Atrial Fribrillation and emphysema Been placed on blood thinners and beta blockers for life. They have not caused tiredness or weakness but everyone is different. I still get breathless. Definitely get the palpitations check out. Best tip I can give is keep chasing your GP until you get a full explanation. Good luck

Had 2 PE. Ist was extremely painful . This was In 2008 and was put on warfarin for 6 months and checked regularly. This was following broken leg so with leg in cast wasnt needing much energy. 2nd PE 10 yrs later with multiple clots both lungs was out shopping and suddenly just had to sit down in nearest shop! couldnt walk any distance without having to sit down . No energy at all. Sent home from hospital on Apixaban for life. You are breathless and so that affects what your energy, I think, and so what you can do.

Still breathless 2 yrs later . Have learned to sit down and get breath back which takes about 20 minutes to to get to normal. Had lung abscess about 30 yrs ago so my lungs are scarred now I think though I am told I have atypical bronchiectasis. Be patient. It's affects vary.

I was on heparin injection in hospital then warfarin at home in 2008 and n 2018 g iven choice of this or Apixaban. The effect of warfarin can be cancelled if necessary by vit K injection but Apixaban cannot and takes 48 hrs for effect to wear off.

Could be problem in emergency.

Hope this helps you to adjust along with all the other info you get.

Take care

Thank you, but gosh you’ve been through the mill. I’ve been put on Apixaban for 6 months. I too get very breathless with the lung conditions, but the breathlessness from the clot is worse and, yes you feel that you can’t take another step. Please take care of yourself and thank you for answering
