Hi i just got my result from the Xray, tho the doctor says it's all anxiety it eases somehow my breathing problem but, still sometimes i have this urge to breath deeply and when i breath deeply my lower ribcage hurt or my left and right side hurts. do you think this is the cause of me breathing deeply too much? stressing the muscles in my lower side??

Hi Burbank,

sorry to hear about the breathing issues.

I assume as you mention an inhaler in a previous post ,you are already diagnosed with Asthma?

I have started using inhalers and I may be incorrect but I am not aware of inhalers causing a stuffy nose.

Though they can cause a dry mouth /hoarse voice . ( though I am sure another member may help if I am wrong there)

As you have run out of money now to have further testing and it has come on

suddenly there is a possibility it may be an allergy.

Have you done anything differently in the last two weeks?

Maybe eaten something different or something different in your environment?

Normally you have a skin prick test to see if any allergies.

When I had my allergy testing I already guessed by how those things make me feel which was my allergies.

So if you have something that makes you feel unwell or affects breathing or whatever you can do a process of elimination for a couple of weeks to see if symptoms improve.

The other immediate possibility it could be is that you hurt yourself while doing

your weights.

In which case hopefully rest will help.

That’s good that the X-ray showed no broken ribs or enlarged heart, but did the doctor give you any advice about how to cope with the anxiety?

Anxiety can be debilitating ....check out the British Lung Foundation website on anxiety, some helpful tips there.

There has been much discussion in the media and books published on the importance of correct, relaxed breathing recently. On the effect of over breathing , or tight upper chest breathing . On the correlation between breathlessness, anxiety , breathlessness.

I have pulled chest muscles in the past through coughing, or even twisting without thinking carefully.

I also had inflammation of the muscles between the ribs.

For the anxiety I find practicing mindfulness and meditation a great help , ask your gp for advice on classes or CBT .

You tube have good videos by Jon Kabat Zinn, and Jud Brewer . I like Jud Brewer s 5 finger breathing exercise to help calm in a panic.

I bought their books second hand from eBay....put them into Covid isolation for a while . Or try the library .

Did the gp rule out any infection , are you coughing any mucus up that could be tested? No fever?

Did they observe and discuss your breathing pattern....breath rate, air intake, which muscles or part of your chest you were using ......upper chest with tight shoulders or relaxed belly breathing...belly out on the in breath, in on the out breath. No constricting clothing .

Breathe low and slow .......gentle, gentle, gentle nose breathing to warm and filter the air and help prevent hyperventilation . Nose breathe as much as you can.....stop and check during the day and relax muscles , from time to time, and practice a small meditation maybe.

Take care , best wishes and keep in touch .

Apologies for the long reply.

Thankyou so much for the response!! yes i think one factor of my shortness of breath is my anxiety, after i got home from the doctor knowing that my lung is fine. my shortness of breath became controllable now. the only problem left is my urge of taking a deep breath and my sides hurting. The doctor did not mention about anything, i think the doctor only wants money. he just mention that its all in my head, he did not ask me about how i feel or what causes my anxiety and how to cope with it. but anyway i think im on the track now im been feeling much better lately but worse at night, but i'll try meditating i will try your suggestions as well thankyou so much! I'll keep you posted.
