Thousands of cancer patients are set to be spared from weeks of back-to-back hospital visits – after studies and trials have shown that five days of treatment, or even less, can be just as effective at blasting away tumours.

People having radiotherapy, which uses powerful radiation beams to kill cancer cells, would once have had their lives turned upside down.

Daily visits to hospital, often for up to six weeks, were the norm – with work and family life put on hold.

I can personally vouch for the accuracy of this.

I did actually refuse my 6-8 week course of radiotherapy because it would have had accumulative damage affect on the lungs. my surgery removed the cancer with clear margins. So this is very good news for any one facing the same situation with only a weeks course.

That's really good news 2grey.

I think my sister might be having this for her breast cancer, I'm sure she said she will have 5 days of radiotherapy. After surgery I endured 3 months of chemo, but would have had 5 week of daily radio on top. I refused because of the risk of pulmonary fibrosis so was relieved when my oncologist agreed because of my Bronchiectasis.
