My son is on his third course of Cipro which he doesn’t seem to be responding to. Our consultant spoke about a nebulised antibiotic to keep the Pseudomonas level low at our last appointment before Covid19 struck!! However despite numerous messages left on his answer machine no one has responded. Our doctor really doesn’t know what course of action to take next. What should I do?
Any advice welcome. My son is 16 in 2 weeks time.

If the pseudo isn’t responding to cipro it is likely that your son needs a course of IV antibiotics to knock it on the head before going on to long term nebulised antibiotic to keep the numbers down. I appreciate that with the covid situation it may be difficult to have in patient I V treatment at present. This is why some consultants are going straight to nebulised.
I suggest calling the consultant’s secretary direct and asking them for the consultant to make a decision and set it up. GPs know very little about dealing with this.
My drug - cefrazidime comes directly from the hospital.
Some GPs can dispense colomycin but will need the consultant to advise this.
I agree with Littlepom it would seem IVs at this stage would be the appropriate action to take. Whilst it is true once Cipro is not doing the trick for pseudo GPs really need the advice of a resp consultant with a special interest on bronchiectasis but one thin s/he can and should be doing is getting in touch with your consultant.
However from our experience it is sometimes more effective to contact the consultant ourselves. The problem is you say you are getting no response, which is unacceptable. As LP says try his secretary and failing that the GP will need to get in touch with them.
Re the nebulised abs, the Con would have to arrange for your son to have an assessment dose in hospital and only then could your GP prescribe them.
Just an option to ask con about. If IVs required it might be possible to have a community team come into your home or possibly teach him or you to do them at home yourself, if they prefer to keep your son out of hospital.
There are options so good luck getting over the first hurdle of contacting them. Check online he may have an email. If you can’t get in touch with the secretary another option would be asking to speak to or phoning a specialist cf/bronchiectasis/pcd nurse or ring a cf or respiratory ward.
