I would say they are safe. I have one but only use it when I think a cold is coming and when my sinuses are playing up. Does it work. Maybe, Maybe not.

Salt is very healing. Type of salt pipe - perhaps one is more effective than another or perhaps not.

I only have used cisca myself I think it helps me :)

If you really are unsure you could check with your doctor before using one.

For me its an at home safe alternative to visiting a salt cave (not that any are open at this time) :)

My emphysema is moderate when I am well.

I have a friend who has severe emphysema with only 21% lung function, she has been to a salt cave and thoroughly enjoy it, said her sinuses felt better afterward and I don't recall her saying she had a bad reaction at all with her breathing (normally she is on oxygen but when she went into the salt cave she went in without the oxygen, there were reclining chairs to relax on to music of choice etc.

After spending many years trying to give up smoking before I finally succeeded in 2007, I decided against trying a salt pipe in case I relapsed back to smoking again. Instead I use salt lamps in various rooms which I have found very beneficial especially over the last 2 months as I have been unable to have my weekly 1 hour visit to the Salt Cave due to shielding.

I tried a saltpipe but found it much too salty for me ( a bit obvious I suppose). I then went to a salt cave which I really enjoyed and felt a benefit from. The only problem was that it was about 25 miles away and not something that I could do regularly. I had had chest infections every 6/8 weeks for the year prior to Jan 20. I have mild bronchiectasis and up until recently, colonised pseudomonas. My lovely sister-in-law bought me a salt lamp for Christmas and I use it every night and, fingers crossed, have not had any flareups/infections since. I can't be sure that it's the lamp doing the trick but it's worth carrying on with it. I have also shielded since early March and that has contributed to my infection free status I am sure.

I hope that you find something that works for you.

While I know of many fellow sufferers benefitting from the use of salt pipes my own experince has been quite the oppoite. While in Hospital it was discovered that even saline in my nebulizer REDUCED my ability to breathe by more than 25%. and I cannot use salt lamps for the same reason. Simply make sure with your respiratory team that salt will be beneficial an not harmful as in my case.
