HELP. SCIATICA HAS GOT ME.

I have COPD and have scoliosis. I have had sciatica originating in my right lower back/buttock right down to the toes since January this year 2019. It is the most painful thing imaginable and I cannot even begin to describe it. All I know is that pain blockers (Pregabalin 00mg. twice a day) and intermittent Paracetamol, lashings of Deep Heat and exercise have proved to be of not much use in helping to relieve the pain. Sciatica has now decided to spread to the other leg and is gradually getting worse by the day. Pretty soon it will consume the lower half of my body.

HELP!!!!

It's proving difficult to walk (the scoliosis doesn't help either) which in turn aggravates the COPD. Have tried losing weight but to no avail as soon - I lose a couple of pounds then put it back again plus more. Have also had 2 lumbar plexus injections this year and did have relief for a couple of months. Next due an injection in 2020.

Please please does anyone have a permanent answer to rid me of this horrible sciatica as it really is something I wouldn't even like to give to my worst enemy.

Oh how I wish I had answers for you Bardear as my poor husband Pete has similar problems to you.

Pete has COPD, sarcoidosis, heart disease and chronic back problems. We’ve tried everything including the fitting of a spinal cord stimulator, all to no avail.

Pete is hoping to see a neurologist in Brighton and we will chase this up in the new year.

I can’t recommend anything as, so far, nothing has worked.

Oh my... I sympathise completely. After the birth of my second child I started having sciatica. I went to a neurologist who told me to strengthen my stomach muscles as they had been weakened due to child birth which seemed to be somehow linked to the sciatic pain. I started to go to a chiropractor as well. Between the chiropractor, the neurologist and me doing stretching exercises and walking to strengthen my muscles I seemed to overcome it, though it took time. That was twenty three years ago now. But I still remember the pain. And the fact that no position, lying, standing or sitting helped eliminate it. Warm baths did help, massages and good pain relief. I really am sorry for you and I hope you will get relief very soon.

I had severe back pains in 1998 due to two compressed discs in the lumbar section of my spine, dismissed by my local cottage hospital until my then husband insisted on an x-ray which showed the damage. After two weeks of worse than inadequate treatment I discharged myself and had treatment by the best local registered osteopath recommended by a friend. With the first treatment he made it possible for me to sit again, and within three months I was able to drive 500 miles to London for a school reunion.

I have found that acupuncture helps. Suffering myself just now and have two impacted disks in my lower back. Last weeks treatment helped so I’ll be back this week for more. If you decide to try it make sure you use a qualified practitioner.

I know someone who got rid with daily exercises from physio and lots of ibuprofen . Hope you get some relief.

Similar to Caspiana I had it during and after pregnancy - it was excruciating with the extra weight. Ever since I've been prone to it.

I used an osteopathic stool at work for years (seat slants downwards from base of spine to back of knees and shins rest on supports). Ever since when sitting, I automatically ensure that my knees are lower than my hips, try never to sit with crossed legs or sitting with legs and knees up beside me on the sofa, use an osteopathic wedge for driving the many miles I do.

At first sign of a twinge I place a tennis ball on the muscle below sacroiliac bone either laying on the floor but usually standing and really put pressure on the sore point until it eases there may be demonstrations on YouTube. I was taught this by a teacher of osteopathy.

I'm lucky to have the brilliant Alison a therapeutic masseuse who comes to my house £30 a session (where I work it's £45 and not as good). Since January I've had right rotator cuff injury which can take 2 years to recover from, it's very nearly better.

It certainly helps to keep a healthy weight. I do Pilates which has helps enormously with posture.

Good luck with finding an Alison in your area. If you're near a school of osteopathy or chiropractic you can get cut price sessions from 3rd or 4th year students, I did that at a college I used to work in.

Look up 'exercise for sciatica' on YouTube, there are a couple of very effective ones.

I so sympathise with you. I do Pilates once a week to strengthen my core muscles and swim every week which does help. I asked my pain specialist nurse about acupuncture and she said it does work for some but suggested a tens machine first. These are quite cheap and cheerful and you put the pads on the dimples on your lower back. This has been of some help to me. Do the lumbar injections work for you? I am having my second lot on Friday. The first time they worked a treat for a week but I’ve been told as they did work for a short time it was worth trying again with a more targeted approach. I hope you find some relief soon as the pain affects your mood and then in turn affects other illnesses that you have.

Hi Bardear I sympathize for your pain, I have copd, diabetes, cirrhosis, i had scoliosis since I was 14yrs old and a Harrington Rod in my back I'm 56 now will be 57 on Monday I have pain on my back and legs, what helps me is gabapentin I have RLS also it helps the pain in my legs and back. I feel so sorry for you having it in BOTH legs. I have it in one and just want to chop the thing off. But of course that's not realistic so here is a website with sciatica exercises in pictures. If you can manage to do them, I hope it helps.

HI I had sciatica for 20 years I tried everything with no success the impression I got from the doctors was they could not do anything unless i had a very dangerous operation on my spine, in the end, I just tried to ignore it it was hard I took no pain killers but had lots of hot baths in the end it went away on it's own. I am not giving you advice just telling you what happened to me
