I am six weeks into recovery from pneumonia and have a short break in Malta booked for the end of this month. I am waiting for the results of my x-ray being taken this week before contacting my insurance company. Does anyone have experience of going abroad while recovering from pneumonia and was travel insurance increased? I am going with my brother and I’m really worried that if I am unable to go he will miss out to. I also feel a bit of sunshine is just what I need. I would be very glad for your help.

Insurance hike post pneumonia
Personal experience only but have found with many insurances if there are any further ongoing outpatients appointments for any condition then that specific condition would be excluded from any cover. They would almost certainly after only 6 weeks even if completely clear and no further hospital appointments booked, increase premium in case you experienced chest infection whilst away.only way is to call them even before you have final result and ask what their policy is on it. If you haven't been treated before for anything similar inlast three years you may find there is no penalty at all.
I’ve had a nightmare recently; had to let insurance company know of recent infection(although well treated with correct abx and improving ) they said they I could either cancel holiday or they would refuse to pay Up! Had to arrange cover costing more than £100 more with very little time to decide what I was going to do, absolute nightmare! Good luck
OMG what a nightmare for you! I’m waiting for results of X-ray before I ring hoping I can say it’s all clear. I feel fine in myself so I’m thinking of going anyway if they refuse to cover respiratory infections as I always take my rescue pack and it is in Europe, and at the moment anyway, I can use my E111.
I updated my travel co. As I'm now on O2 they offered to either pay off existing hols booked or insure me but not for my IPF. I cxld with refund. I trawled internet everyone rejected me bar one co. who kindly offered to insure me for £2660 for single trip🤣 i rang MIA travel, I told them everything after a 40 min call they insured me for £71.
Yep I've checked it EHIC is part of it but not all I'm covered for 5 million which would cover anything EHIC didn't. Also for forbid repatrionisation
You will have to consider whether it is worth it. Malta has had a health arrangement with the predating Brexit. Get an Ehic card and you will get free treatment in clinics and the hospital. The only thing you pay for is medication.
If you go to a local gp, no appointment necessary (queue up) and you will pay €10.
I have had excellent treatment for my bronchiectasis here.
Hi kirsten, has your doc said you can travel. I have always had to wait for at least 12 weeks before booking another hol. Travel insurance will be very expensive and they may even refuse you cover. If you are fit to go, I hope you have a good time. Maximonkey
I have not had the results of my x-ray yet but my GP told me not to worry as the hospital would’ve contacted her if there was a problem. Surprisingly my insurance company did not hike my annual insurance that includes America and Cruises. I was pleasantly surprised and very relieved X
I informed my insurance company when I had had a couple of hospital admissions. They weren’t so worried about that but when I said I was going for a bronchospy they immediately cancelled the insurance as in the small print they didn’t cover if you are waiting on further procedures. I would always wait before informing them again. I hope you get sorted and have a great time in Malta.
Thanks, for your helpful advice Mooka
Like you I am in the same position. I am recovering from pneumonia. I contacted my insurance company as we go on a cruise and stay holiday in July. They added a premium of £189. Fingers crossed I will not catch any thing else. Good Luck Harold
I am also going on a cruise in July as well as the quick trip to Malta in two weeks time. Have you had your follow-up x-ray yet and been cleared? What a game this all is. Enjoy your cruise. Kristin
You have been lucky, I go for my CT scan tomorrow afternoon. Fingers crossed.
How did you get on?
