It is less a matter of distance, more a matter of getting moderately breathless, recover your breathing and keep repeating. I exercise for 30-45 mins daily on top of being active at work all day. Basically your strength will build over time and your breathing will improve along with it. The more you do, the more you can do.
I agree with 2greys. Find out what you're comfortable doing now, and use that as a benchmark. Then try to improve on it gradually. Think in terms of a small amount every few days. One day make the distance further, and when that's OK make another change, say increase the difficulty slightly, and so on. All the best.
Just do your best, it's exercise for your benefit, not a competition! I must admit though I do like to keep a record and try to beat my "personal best". I gather that when you can't talk and breathe at the same time you have done enough exercise. I use a treadmill and it has really increased my stamina. I also find that I sleep much better.
