Constant lump in throat, yellow mucus.

Hi everyone. I've had this problem for the last 2-3 months now. It started with a cold but my symptoms only got worse. Now every day I feel like I have a ball of mucus in the bottom of my throat, which won't budge at all. I also have post-nasal drip. I'm doing many sinus rinses every day and am also using dymista, I've been on four courses of antibiotics with no relief. It's affecting my breathing sometimes but only when I'm anxious, otherwise it's just an annoyance. When I try deep coughing I get thick, yellow mucus up but my lungs have no crackles. The doctors are saying it's my anxiety... Has anyone been in a simular situation? I know there was a thread many years ago but I can no longer comment on it. Thank you.

I have a fairly high stress life at the moment and keeping calm is difficult! But I'll try a bit harder to. Thank you. :)

Drinking plenty of fluids may also help - cups or mugs regularly throughout the day, aiming for a total of 1.5 to 2 litres. I keep a bottle of water with me in my handbag wherever I go, and take a sip when my throat feels tight.

If it affects your voice sometimes, try VocalZone lozenges, available from pharmacies like Boots in the coughs and colds remedies section

I'm usually bad at keeping hydrated but since becoming sick it's been one of my top priorities, I could definitely aim for drinking a bit more though. Thank you for your reply.

Thick yellow mucus when you do deep coughing is a sign of an infection in the lungs. You don’t need crackles as sign of an infection. There seems to be a combination of sinus and chest infection here, not being treated with the correct antibiotic. So I suggest it is back to the doc, tell them you are coughing up mucus from deep in your lungs and yes, keep getting it out.

The doctors seem to think I'm coughing it up from my throat, I've had sputum tests done but apparently that was a waste of time. I've been on four antibiotics, penicillin, klacid and ciprofloxaxin are the ones I remember, another one started with a c. Cipro has given me severe pain in my leg though... I regret taking that one, as I'm a 21 year old female with a 6 month old child. I haven't been able to enjoy anything since becoming sick, and the doctors have the nerve to tell me it's just my anxiety. Yes, it definitely plays a part, but I still feel completely unwell. I'll be going back to see the one doctors that might actually help me (I've seen 6 of them so far). Are there any antibiotics that are worth trying for something like this? I'm completely out of ideas, and feeling like I'm going to die every day isn't a pleasant feeling.

Have you had a chest xray

No I haven't, I'll look into it though. Thank you.

Unfortunately ciproxin can cause tendonitis, which could have given you the pain in your legs. The bacteria don’t always show up on lab plates so the docs seem to have been throwing different abs at you ad hoc in the hope that one of them will work. Of course, they also have to be given in a high enough dose for a long enough time. Only you can know, by very carefully monitoring your body, where the mucus is coming from. One thing is certain. I have never heard of anxiety producing thick yellow mucus but I have heard of ‘we don’t know what it is so we will push the patient off’’ syndrome in doctors. It is obvious that the docs are not handling this properly or bringing about any improvement. You are very young and need to be able to get on with your life. Only the correct diagnosis and treatment can do this. Do you have somebody who can go to the doctor with you to support you.? This needs further investigation and as the dctors have failed in their efforts so far you need to insist that this is done. I’m afraid that we have to be vocal in our own interests and vociferous in getting the right treatment.Good luck.

Yeah, I read about it before I took it but was unfortunately another 'theres no way this will happen to me' case, but I am desperate to get better so I was willing to try anything. I was only on each antibiotic for a week, the ciprofloxaxin I was prescribed for two but after one would not take it anymore. With each antibiotic I didn't feel any improvement within the week. I have someone to come with me and will be going back soon, as my quality of life has gone down completely. As well as anxiety the last doctor tried to blame post-natal depression, they're definitely trying to push me off. Only one out of the doctors I saw was willing to refer me to an ENT, and get a CT scan. I'll be going back to see her, hopefully soon, as the throat tightness makes me not want to eat or drink.

You were just so unlucky. I have been taking cipro since 1986 with no sore tendons. Let us no how you go on.

I would say no wonder you're anxious! Being fobbed off like this is infuriating at the best of times but you have a six month old to care for 24/7. How dare they. Yes, do see that decent GP again, they're worth their weight in gold.

Do you smoke? Some docs are dismissive if you do, just a thought. A ct scan would be a very good idea. If you can't get one on NHS would you be able to get one privately? Having yellow mucus coming up (or down) isn't right - and I've never heard of it as a symptom of anxiety either!

You could give the BLF help line a ring if you're in the UK? 03000 030555 during office hours, they're very knowledgeable . Best to you, P

No I don't smoke, drink, or use any substances. They're just pushing me off big time! I'll look more into getting a CT. I'm in Australia. I've never heard of it as a symptom either, and I've had anxiety for most of my teenage years! Thank you.

You needto keep your fluids up even if it's little sips at a time. Try for trips ask the doctor for prescription they may help have all the vitamins. But make sure you ask for the juice. The milky ones are not very nice. They did help with my drinking and i was put on steroids I had gone down to 6st. But steroid tablets helped me. Sorry should say I have copd. But glad problem not able to eat or drink. See what the doctor thinks. Your little one needs you fit and well and you want to be able to play with little without feeling as though you are being pushed from a pillar to post. Hopefully the lady doctor will help you.. let us know how you are doing.

It appears you have a sinus infection that needs treating. My E,N T Dr says yellow sputum is indicative of sinus infections. If not treated it can eventually go to your lungs.

Yes that's what I'm worried about but no doctor is taking me seriously. I'll be going back. Thank you.

Try a glass of orange juice before going to bed that will help to thin the mucus in the morning (i too have the same problem) and it isn,t as thick and gloppy, also what has worked wonders for me is Sterimar the Decongestion one (orange colour not the blue one) it,s been a god send and steaming with olbas oil also helps,i do know what you mean it,s horrible and hope this helps xx

YellowZebra profile image
YellowZebra in reply totavymaid

I didn't know orange juice could do that, it just makes my mucus thick when I drink it haha. I'll have a look into Sterimar, thank you, I have only been able to find the blue one here so far but I'll keep looking.

I buy my Sterimar from boots it's about £7.99 if it works for you it's worth every penny.Hope you find something that helps because it is horrible.

I'm in Australia and I can only find the blue one unfortunately. Maybe I should give that a try still? Otherwise I'm just using dymista and doing a few sinus rinses a day.

Sorry didn't realise you could go on to the Sterimar website that might say where to buy or maybe buy straight from them.

I was bringing up thick green gunk exactly as you discribe. A chest xray showed nothing but luckily I was due a bronchoscopy which meant they took a sample and once lab work was done they knew which antibiotics to use. I'd make an appointment with your Dr and have a sample of the green stuff with you so it can be sent off for lab work. If you call in your Dr's beforehand you can get a pot to pop it in. I hope this helps.

I did this, went back to the doctors, and this specific doctor wouldn't talk to me about my results, said antibiotics won't do anything, and blamed my depression and anxiety! I have little to no energy to do anything and they just won't help me. I will be going back soon as I obviously need the correct antibiotic. Thank you.

Is there any chance you could change to a different surgery? My hubby and I are a different surgeries and their treatment couldn't be more different. If there's another in your area it may be worth changing. I've found the younger Dr's are the ones who tend to be more proactive.

Yes the one doctor willing to help me is young, so I'll be seeing her asap. If she can't help I'll be going to a different doctors altogether. Thank you.
