constant mucus since childhood

Hi all

I will start from what I remember from childhood and build from there. From early childhood I have had problems with my throat, breathing and catarrh (mucus). At the age of three I had to have an inhaler to try and clear my lungs (or strengthen them) and was diagnosed with mild asthma as well. I first really remember having daily catarrh from the age of seven above, and remember it being annoying then, but just something I saw as a part of daily life as it became "normal". My mum tried removing dairy from my diet at some point, and took me back to the drs about the mucus around that age, but chose to use homeopathic medicine instead of the prescribed meds (cant remember what was prescribed, and also not faulting homeopathic medicine) although this didn't seem to improve the condition, as it just continued anyway.

I have got to the point now (25) where the mucus in my throat is becoming a lot more troublesome, I wake up feeling like my throat is nearly blocked with it (feels like a mild drowning sensation, or like there is a fullness in my chest) I nearly throw up or throw up trying to bring it up daily , I feel ill and my stomach hurts or causes me problems quite a lot, and I am getting more fatigued by the day. If I get a cold, it gets so much worse, as of right now I am recovering from a cold and by the time its the afternoon , am feeling nauseous due to the levels of catarrh in my throat.

I am always feeling ill, tired and starting to lose my appetite. I am going to the drs about this hopefully this week if I can get an appointment, but was wondering is anyone else / has anyone else experienced this, and did anyone get any solutions from going to the drs?

Thanks

x

Hi, ririamber, and welcome to the site. I'm sorry, I haven't experienced what you're going through, but I know there are many member who have. May I suggest you go back to your GP to ask for a referral to a consultant to get this checked out properly. Some people use carbocysteine or n-acetylcysteine to help make mucus thinner and easier to cough up. There are physio exercises you could be taught by a physiotherapist to help you cough up mucus, and you can find some videos on YouTube demonstrating these techniques. Some people also use a flutter device or the more expensive aerosure device to help them.

Wishing you all the best, and hoping you find some relief really soon.

Thank you , when I get to see the dr will ask for the referral, and ask about meds which can help, thanks again :)

Good advice from Ergendl above. I too struggle with mucus and will follow this post in the hope that someone has a good solution (I do take carbocisteine, which I believe helps, but can't use NAC). Good luck

I'm presuming asthma is causing you extra mucous???? I would go back to your GP and get a referral to a specialist, pulmonary dr. This is there specialty...some of the dots aren't connecting, so make sure a specialist checks out all possibilities. The system doesn't partner you well, so you tell your dr what you want next..lots of luck✌️

Have you been checked for bronchiectasis- I have asthma but it didn’t produce phlegm. I got mild bronchiectasis after pneumonia- student physiotherapists gave me great exercises to go especially deep breathing which is wonderful.
