Developed a cough about 2.5 years ago & it has never left me! I have had 2 chest xrays, countless bloods, lung function tests, allergy tablets, asthma inhalers, reflux medications....list is endless.
I have a constant tickle in my throat & I mean constant.....I cough myself awake every night with this hacking cough. The respiratory consultant said I have allergies to my cats.....I wheeze from my throat...not my lungs....I use my ventolin inhaler and the wheeze goes within 10 seconds......but the cough lingers and lingers......
I am stuck & do not know which way to turn now....I went back to the Dr and he said its allergies and keep taking antihistamines and my inhaler......I am 37 and female plus I smoke (dont say it, I know its a contributing factor to my health and my cough), I am so stressed now not just with this cough but other things going on in my life....
I just need to know what can I do next, CT scan?

How awful fo you but have you tried staying somewhere fat free for while and see if cough clears ? Seems if it is definitely cat allergy you shouldn’t really go near them, I understand having pets is such a comfort but not so good if making us unwell, I hope you find relief coughing is part of me now I have copd and we’ll know how tiring it is to cough so much! I wish you well and cough free days ahead for you c
Thanks for your reply. I have tried to stay away from the cats for 2 nights recently and whilst I did not even realize I think I did not cough as much but can not say for certain.
I get so fed up with coughing, my husband even shakes me to try and make me stop...The thing that frightens me the most is lung cancer.....horrified at the thought that it could be!
May I ask are you on any other inhaler and also what did he give you for allergies I know what you’re saying I use to have this I take 180mg a day of Fexofenadine and and Ventolin but the one that stops it is this one I take alvesco 160 inhaler/ciclesonide the specialise put me on l hope this helps you it may be worth asking the question
When you see the doctor ask him about them I think everyone with a lung condition should be on some sort of allergy tablets has there are so many things that sets the iungs off but do ask
Don’t think that way it can get on your nerves and gets you down it’s all about trial and error that’s how we get to the right medicine to do the job tell your doctor you want to see a specialist to get to the bottom of the problem if you worry you only make yourself feel worse tell him how you feel and how it affects you and you need help and you need it now don’t worry
Thank you - I am seeing him in 2 weeks and then I will speak to him about it! I cant handle it anymore..........everytime I cough I think lung tumor & its hard not to think like that....I know I have had 2 chest xrays but it was probably missed !
I know how you feel everyone feels the same when something is on going I know it sounds mad but stop thinking about it be strong and tell your doctor how you feel about this I know it sounds easy for me to say that everyone thinks it’s cancer as that’s the first thing that comes to mind when your lungs play up until a doctor or specialist tells you that you haven’t got cancer so wait see the doctor you may even get a surprised I’m like that most of the time coughing but I’ve got intestinal emphysema and severe asthma and 7 more illnesses one being rare which affects my eating so please stop worrying until you see your doctor 👍🏻 Stay safe
I coughed day and night for months, CT scan was how my pulmonary fibrosis was diagnosed, so easy to see it on that when x rays showed nothing. I know that in the UK it is hard to get a CT scan. Here it was done when the x rays showed nothing and I was still coughing and so short of breathe.
So I was coughing all night - not waking up but my husband said I cough so badly during the night sounding like a seal nearly........I need to go back to the Dr I guess....but so bloody worried!
Ask/beg/plead for them to do a CT scan, coughing so badly is not normal, at least you will get some answers that way, cancer shows up on an x ray so you haven't got that by the sound of it. Suppose I am lucky that I always look on the brighter side and hope for the best, better for your mental health that way too, and do all I can to keep healthy. One of my lung diseases is my own fault, heavy smoker but packed up 28 years ago, and the other is caused by my old job abd the fact that in those days health and safety was non existent and I breathed in toxic fumes for 26 years.
I have had lung problems for about 5 years now and I have a cough that comes and goes. All types of coughs as well, can sometimes last a couple of months and then just goes away and it might be ages before another one appears . But if you are worried ask your Doc for tests to put your mind at rest
No good tormenting yourself about something that you are not sure about x
When my trouble started I was told they thought I had lung cancer and after 6 months of having tests , biopsies and seeing 3 different consultants in different hospitals , they turned around and said " Well you know what we don't think it is cancer " I was not best pleased to put it mildly. But I do have emphysema which causes me problems and plenty of other things as well . Anyway I hope things go well for you . x
I went back to the GP yesterday - he has ordered some blood tests to do with allergy checking, the Dr reckons it is allergies but we need facts and evidence, he said if my allergy bloods come back normal then we do a CT scan on my lungs He gave me another inhaler, seems to help during the day but still coughing & waking myself up at night (like I did last night even with the new inhaler!)
