I only found out I have asthma this Wednesday and had a bad asthma attack needing emergency hospital treatment in A&E. It was very scary. I think one of my triggers is cold weather which I'm now trying to limit whilst I recover. What do people find is best and most practical way to cover their face when outside please? I'm an adult but petite and the height of an average 11 year old if that helps. Bonus tips for pretty girly things as I'm a girly girl! I have scarves at home, would they work? I'm also happy to buy new things if they help. Thank you ππ

How do you cover your face in cold weather?
I wear scarves wrapped loosely,so air is warmed
Thank you. I'm autistic so sometimes it's hard for me to understand things, could you explain how you wrap it round please?
Hi Ruth. I use Buffys. I buy them in all colours and patterns. When not across my mouth they look chic around the neck or indeed used to keep my hair back. I often buy them when travelling and have a number from different cultures. Australian Buffys are my favourites especially those with Aboriginal Prints. You can get them in girlie prints too
Hello, thank you for your reply. I'm autistic so sometimes it's hard for me to understand things. I've tried a Google search for Buffys and on Amazon and it only comes up with Buffy the vampire slayer stuff π€£. What should I be searching for, and how do I wear them please?
Sorry Ruth . Put Buff Neckwear into your search engine and you will find designs and images. I will also share with you the time that I have spent training myself to breathe through my nose. A large proportion of Asthma patients breath through their mouths and this does not help when out in the wind or as a filtering mechanism to reduce damaging substances. It has taken me a while to breathe through my nose but it has made a big difference. I even paid out for an on line course for breathing by James Nestor entitled The Power of Breath. Itβs been a huge help. Best wishes Sue
Thank you. I'll have a search. I'm lucky and have a background as a classically trained singer (although I don't sing professionally any more )so my breathing is generally abdominal and I'm not a mouth breather (unless I'm singing!)
I wear the snoods/handy bands from Seasalt and White Stuff (Other retailers are available) I have a sensitive skin and they are soft and cosy. I wear mine nearly all of the time then just pull them over my mouth and nose when needed. They come in loads of patterns and colours. (There has recently been a similar discussion and suggestions, perhaps you could find it using the search function. I know someone was recommending bamboo fabric.)
Thank you so much. I did try a search for I posted but couldn't find anything. I'll look up snoods. Do they stay over your nose well?
Good enough, but I am not an outdoor person, never have been.π€£ But for a short walk they suit me. I don't know how they'd withstand a long wintery tramp. I'm sure they'd be ok.
I've the same issue with cold air so use a Buff RoseRosetta. I've a small head so wear a child size which stays in place over nose and mouth. The adult size falls down which is of no use to me. I get mine through Amazon.co.uk. the Buff brand is treated so moisture wicks away and they don't get soggy. They're made in fine knit jersey, wool or I have a couple made from bamboo fibre . They wash well and dry quickly, and fit in my pocket when not in use. (So I dont lose them).
Oh yes, I always breathe in and out through my nose, the air is less cold if it's got a few centimetres of nasal passageway to warm up before hitting lower airways.
I do the same with a loose scarf and ensure you're breathing through your nose if you can, to warm and filter the air.
I tried a scarf round my nose and mouth yesterday and only breathed through my nose, but the chilly night air still made my chest feel uncomfortable. Maybe I needed a thicker scarf?
Ask your doctor if he can get you an appointment with a respiratory physio at the hospital. A respiratory physio will help you learn to breathe more through your nose and less through your mouth.
As others have said, scarves and buffs. I also wear loose turtlenecks and polo necks in winter, and can pull the neck up over my nose and mouth if caught out and about without anything else.
I wear a necker pulled up over my mouth and nose. As shown here in the Buff advert buff.com/gb/ but you can get them from lots of places
Amazon do many different colours and designs. amazon.co.uk/buffs/s?k=buffs They are also called snoods
A snood is best, it fits and stays on better than a scarf. If you google snood it will explain. Do keep warm and comfy now winter is approaching.
This is my biggest issue. It is possible to buy heat exchanger masks but they are expensive. I wear a wool covid mask and scarf wrapped around my head and face but breathing can get difficult! If you breathe out on to wool it heats up slightly and then takes the chill off the air breathing in. Always breath through your nose. Good luck.
Hi RuthRosetta, I use scarves when the weather is cold, I find this helps. You could use a mask with a scarf over it and you would still look pretty. Take care, Maximonkey
