Tightness

I was wondering if anyone takes a syrup cough medicine to try and loosen chest congestion. ? If so, does it help and is it safe to take with spiriva and ventolin. Ive been on prednisolone short term, but now its stopped my chest feels rather tight again.

Depends on what type of cough syrup don’t take the codeine one or the one that represses coughing because you will end up with a full blown chest infection.

Hot drinks, vicks on your chest or olbas oil, sleeping propped up at night will help you to shift it.

I’d go back to the GP for a checkup tomorrow.

..or you have an infection in there or the remaining of something not clearing up, or you need physiotherapy to drain and learn how to drain your mucus..

Always take your inhalers as advised.

Take care x

Thank you for your reply. I have to see my doctor this week for follow up of chest xray and angina test. I’m fed up with it now, my oxygen level is fine but i still feel tight band round chest and get breathless more than usual. Been like this since exacerbation at Christmas.🙁

I have got some benylin mucous cough medicine, which is supposed to be an expectorant, i’m going to try a few doses and see if that helps. I feel quite bloated and tight under the ribs, which i am wondering is the effects of spiriva or the prednisolone ive just finished. I try to stay cheery but when you have a constant problem that doesnt ease it brings you down doesnt it. I hope you are ok and safe on your travels ,

You can always ask the pharmacist about drug interactions.

Thank you 😊

Yes I have done this with an expectant cough medicine from Boots. It must be an expectant as it has something in it that loosens chest congestion so that you can coughing up.It worked very well for me.Best wishes Sandybluesx

Thank you. I’m trying the benylin. I dont have a cough but just tightness which i imagine is just mucous that wont shift.

Hi Hun, Just got back from my breathe easy Exercise Class. Must have missed your post on this. I too bought over the counter cough Meds, about 2 years ago when I had continuous Bronchitis . I should have known better, I overdosed and had Diaorrea Constantly, I had to be checked over in Out Patients and got told off , Thank Goodness it was only the medicine. Best to ask the Pharmacist. Do you know the " Huff" procedure ? that will release all deep down mucus, it does work. XXX Carolina .

in reply toHacienda

Thank you. Yes, i agree. I am not taking the cough expectorant now. I do the huff procedure. It does help.

Benylin doesn't do it as well as boots.Ask for Boots own expectorant cough medicine.I only took it for three days for 3times a day and it loosened tight phlegm so could cough it up.After that although I had an antibiotic I started improving The problems gone Thank goodness xSandybluesx

I have very rarely used cough medicines at all, they are never suggested and when I have tried them they don’t seem to do any good

Can only say that they used to give me doses of cough misture when I was in ICU. I am notorious for never having been able to give a sputum sample. Still couldn't even with the cough mixture but it did ease my chest. Sheila x

PS Never take a Suppressant always make sure it's an Expectorant. Sheila x

Presume you're on Carbocisteine ? That's the only thing that works for me x

in reply tomskpjb

No, i’m not on that. I was on spiriva and i now have another course of prednisolone. And ventolin when i need it. I might mention Carbocisteine to my doctor.

Must admit to trying a medicine from the £1 shop called KILLKOFF and also the pastilles and they are very good for stopping the cough ... might be worth a try x
