Could someone please explain to me whether the obstruction felt in breathing with emphysema is purely in the chest. Or does anyone feel that there is a restriction or more accurately a tightness in the throat area. If I lower my Adam's apple My breathing is pretty much ok. I know this might seem odd but I wondered if it rings true for anyone else. Thanks.

I sometimes wonder and not sure when i get a bit hard to breath if the hard to breath tightnes feeling is my chest or throat has it feels has if something is sqeezing my breathing tube in my trhoat.
when you say lower your adams apple do you mean pushing it down with your fingers on your throat.
i dont think there is any odd or silly questions regarding this copd and if there is i think i have ask most of them lol
Ok so now I will say that I also have a hiatal hernia so have acid reflux. I didn't mention it in the original post as I thought people might jump straight to it. But it seems odd to me. I guess by lowering your Adam's apple your are making the hole bigger ( technical term there) so it would make breathing easier. But I'm wondering if there may be some inflammation or scarring taking place. Also it goes away with salbutamol. But that could also be making everything else open up so even though the restriction/obstruction could be in the throat you won't notice it so much.
Do any of you suffer with any digestive issues at all.
I just bumped into your post. How did you find out you have hiatus hernia and what were your symptoms?
I am currently having chest tightness and difficulty breathing after a walk in the cold so I don’t know what caused it... I am suffering from breathing difficulties since earlier this year.
Yes, it is all part of the COPD, my doctor has just put me on an anti inflammatory mouth wash, because I keep getting inflammation of 1 or 2 areas of the throat, teeth, sinus etc, just ONE at a time.
I don't want too many antibiotics or steroids until my condition really warrants them! I have believed all my life that people treat them like lollies, l won't be immune to them when I really need them now.
Hi I've got severe emphysema and feel most tightness in chest area, if I have a really bad attack throat, voice and a great shortness of breath together with a tightening of the chest, even doing the washing up, getting dressed etc. I also have a lot of mucus .Ideally you need to see your GP to go over you, it may just be that you need an inhaler, he will know best.
I RECENTLY WAS PUT ON AN INHALER CALLED ANORO, I HAVE NO IDEA IF IT IS THE BEST OR THE WORST BUT IT HAS IMPROVED MY BREATHING. MY GP SAID THERE IS A NEW INHALER DRUG ON THE HORIZON WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE LATEST AND GREATEST AND I WILL POST THE NAME AND RESULTS WHEN I HAVE THEM. I AM ALSO RECENTLY WORKING OUT IN THE GYM FOUR DAYS A WEEK, AND TRYING TO ELIMINATE SUGAR FROM MY DIET TO LOOSE 30 POUNDS, WHETHER IT IS A COMBO OF ALL 3 OF THESE ACTIONS, OR JUST MY LUCKY MONTH I DON'T KNOW BUT IT IS WORKING AND I PLAN TO KEEP ON KEEPING ON.
Yes it would be great to hear of anything new. I wonder if it's the ibuprofen inhaler that has been researched for such a long time. They say it has totally replenished the lungs of mice to like new condition. They were mainly trying it for fibrosis patients but say it would help anyone with lung diseases. Let's hope they come up with a fix at some point soon. Underfunding compared to everything else and not fast tracked like cancer drugs etc.
I will update as soon as I know, you are correct they tend to only fund (in the U.S.A.) rich men's disease's, however I can't complain too loudly as I also had a six way bypass 14 years ago which lasted 8 plus hours and new technology saved me.
