I went to the doctors on Monday just gone and got Amoxicillin 500mg for my chest infection. But I still dont feel any better. I have asthma and bronchiectasis. Im still coughing up phlegm, struggling to breath and taking my inhaler quite a lot. Ive given them a phlegm sample on Tuesday, so they should get results back by tomorrow or Tuesday.

Anyone still struggling after a week og antibiotics for chest infection??
Amoxicillin may not have been the correct antibiotic. Did you have your sputum tested? Do go back to the surgery and take a sputum sample. A chest infection frequently needs two courses of antibiotics. Maybe a different one would help.
I agree - I had several antibiotics over a period of 3 weeks for my last exacerbation over Christmas and New Year, much better but still coughing - a lot
Andrew
I would say go back to doctors, my doctor said amoxycillin is the first drug of choice and after a bit of googling I found out its a cheaper option so they just fob us off with it first time, your sputum test will show which antibiotics you need, hope you fee better soon
Once your results are back the doctor will know the correct antibiotic you need. Same happened to me and they phoned me to tell me and sent prescription to pharmacy. Good luck . Hope you feel better soon.
November to January i was on 3 sets of antibiotics and prednisone went away for a bit but always comes back see the Dr again tomorrow for the same thing
Your Doctor should have given you a sputum test, a 2 week course of antibiotics and steroids. That is the normal procedure.
Jay. You need stronger. Ant- biotics. Drs like to give the cheaper option. For serious. Chest infections. best to get. augmented. 625 mg. I just had the same. Problem with a new Dr. And It's a joke. It usually takes me 3 weeks to get rid of the cough, phlegm etc after taking amoxicillin, and breathing takes a bit longer to improve but will gradually perhaps about 5-6 weeks. I find amoxicillin has no side effects through compared to some of the harsher antibiotics that make me very ill. It will improve to hang in their. Did you take the steriods too?
Thanks for your responses all. The doctor i saw was a muppet tbh. Didnt even look at my case history properly. Whic is why I have a named doctor but i never get to see her. Its a shambles with my condition because im seeing lots of different people who dont my history, so dont treat me correctly. Im fed up of it. Grrr. But my consultant is great on the upside and the first time in 16 years my asthma is ok. Will ring doctors now and let them know how im feeling. See what they say!@
I rang the doctors at 12 o clock to get a call back for advice... didnt get a call back until 4 o clock!!! Anyway got a prescription for some Doxycycline and told the sputum sample didnt grow anything. I said well I still dont feel right. She said if they dont help by towards end of week I will need to be seen by them!! Im gonna let my consultant know whats going on too. Even though he advised me to increase my preventor inhaler (Fostair 100/6) to 3 times twice a day. It doesnt seem to help. In fact its making my reflux worse... i cant bloody win....
I had a stubborn one back in November and doxycycline fixed it - I find Amox pretty useless for a bad infection. Did they give you the steroids to go with it?
