Asthma & Diabetes. I'm just recovering from pleurisy infection 5 days in hospital, and feel very weak. I've also been told I may have type 2 diabetes due to inhaler use / occasional prednislone for chest infections over the years. Very frustrated this has not very been mentioned before, I feel let down. Anyone else heard of this?

Asthma / diabetes
Sorry to hear of your diagnosis Myvanwy. Type 2 diabetes is a well known side effect from long term use of prednisolone - it's listed in the patient leaflet inside the medication packaging. Oral steroids are such a mixed blessing - they can save our lives but they do come with their own problems too. Swings and roundabouts Im afraid. I'll put a link on in a minute.
Here it is, from Diabetes UK: diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-med...
Sorry to hear that you may have diabetes 2.
I have had it for many years— you can cope with it if you take the prescribed tablets and reduce your sugar intake.
Good luck
Bill
Hi Myvany,
I have Bronchiectasis, COPD and Asthma and have had to use steroid based medication for a number of years and of course Prednisolone for flare ups. When the time came to consider having a maintenance daily dose of pred. I checked what could be the side effects myself and then discussed it with my consultant, I now have type two diabetes along with several other problems caused by pred medication and as O2 says its a mixed blessing but it does allow me to allow me to be active to a certain degree instead just sitting in a chair or bed all day.
Regards
Sue
One of the inhalers I had, I believe it may have been Anoro, mentioned it may effect blood sugar test results. I don’t recall if it mentioned elevating the Blood sugar or not just that it may effect blood test results
