Seritide and Diabetes
Myhusband (PF) is type 2 diabetic, on medication, and if he takes steroid tablets it makes his blood sugars less controlled, so they are generally higher than normal. This is an acknowledged side effect. My understanding with seretide and other inhaled steroids is that it is a much smaller dose and only directed to the surface of the lung, not systemic, and he didn't have a problem when using it. I suggest you call the BLF helpline before stopping the Seretide.

What I've always asked about Seretide is why is one of the most common side affects for it Pnuemonia. We with lung disease are told to do everything possible to avoid getting a Pnuemonia?????
So I gave it back to the consultant and I'm happily back on Symbicourt 400/12.
People need to read things and make their own minds up on whether they actually wanna take that risk.Don't forget that GP's and Consultants all have a budget and are also told what drugs to push just to save a few pennies. Also try and remember the Pharmacuetical Industry is one of the biggest profit making Industries in the World and when was the last time they actually produced a cure for something???,as far as I'm aware it was the introduction of Penicillin.
Thanks wiskas, that is something else i have learned..it makes you wonder what to take for your lungs and health in general..what is symbicourt ..do you have cats like me lol Bob.
Hi wiskas.....Both advair and symbicort also have the side effect of causing pnuemonia. Maureen usa
It's an inhaled Cortecosteriod very similar to Seretide but it ain't cheap,I found it a lot easier to inhale too as its a very fine powder and not granules like in the basic form of Seretide.
Just ask your GP or Consultant if you can try it instead of the Seretide. They'll probably start you on the 200/6 does and see how you get on with it.
thanks for all your help i will ask about that inhaler and i must be going blind too lol i just noticed your pic and you have dogs wish i was able to have a dog but i can only walk a few yards and that leaves me gasping so i had to have a couple of cats cos they look after themselves apart from the cleaning out of their litter boxes.. thanks again wiskas. Bob..
Sorry I say it isn't cheap...thats with respect to what budget your GP has,if he/she is a decent character like mine are they won't mind putting you on it.
I know my gp`s well enough now to be able to twist there arm.... Bob
Sorry Bob just read your post and yeh I have a pooch, got about 6 months before diagnosis,my boys just turned 5 last month.I can't walk him either now but he's a well mannered boy and the dog walker says he's a pleasure to have with her, then again bet she wouldn't say that if I didn't pay her.
I think all steroid inhalers affect blood sugar / glucose levels. My Hb1ac can fluctuate from 36 to 54 according to my steroid inhaler and prednisone use. I’ve been on a pre diabetes course which has helped to lower my level to normal at the mo though I know that extra inhaler use will shoot it up. I eat more healthily and walk more now as I know they will help control the levels.
