Lung function test results
Hi
As much as you are entitled to your results, for a hard copy there may be a charge.
They should give you a overview ie your FEV1 verbally.
Recently had mine done I was given a verbal indication.
When I previously asked for my results to add to my DLA claim. I was told the information will be sent to DWP on request free of charge. For me there would a charge. ( the nurse wrote down two numbers for me, which with help from internet I was able to compile a satisfactory response for my claim)
Thanks, Stone. Our replies came at the same time...
Seems odd to me. I always get given the print-off at the time they are done, and this is at the GPs, at St James’s in Leeds, and at the Royal Brompton. Presumably you have been told the results as part of a consultation with your GP? What explanation have you been given for the refusal? Hmmmm.... Tricky. Ask the practice manager?
What the legality is, I don’t know. Generally we are entitled to all notes, letters, test results, but doctors retain the right to withhold information if they think it could harm the patient.
stone-UK is the one who often knows these things, and there are others here who understand these things.
All the best
Yes, I always get a print-off too - never any question about a fee.
And yes again, Im sure you are entitled to know your results. As far as I know that's been the case in the UK for some time now. Your GP should receive a letter or notice of your results, maybe a summary, and any correspondence to your GP by consultants, you should automatically be copied into.
Im just going to check this on google and will correct if Im wrong ... Ok here I am again, not much the wiser. Seems there is room for discretion by different surgeries. Ive never had any problem accessing test results, and I have been given my notes to go through at the back of the waiting room.
Im wondering what the issue would be in refusing to give them to you. Do they think you won't be able to handle knowing, or do they feel it's too difficult to go through what they mean with you? Beats me. I would always want to know, even if the results were bad.
Remember that phrase about patient choice which was circulating after the 2012 Health and Social Care Act - "Nothing about me without me". That seems relevant to this question.
The hospital did the test in october i have a diagnosis but they wont give me my %
I had a COPD check just last week and the nurse printed off a copy of my results there and then for me without any charge, which was great as I was able to send them in with my PIP claim
When I went to Charring Cross for my full spirometry tests, which were performed by a nurse, or technician, they were happy to let me see and have the figures, but they weren't allowed to discuss them with me because, of course, they weren't qualified. In your case, it may just be that the people you are asking can't give you the results - because they think it is something for the consultant to discuss with you properly once they have all the information or test results in front of them. But it certainly isn't right, very helpful, or polite for someone else to know your personal information and to withhold from you without giving you a good reason. IMHO.
Hi, you are allowed access to your medical records under the data protection act. Also might be under the Access to medical records act???? (Not sure tho).
They are however able to charge upto £50 I believe (might have gone up). Lots of doctors have an online system where you can view your records for free!!!
I ask and get a copy of my spirometry results free tho.
Hope this helps 😀
Mike
When I wanted to see the records of a deceased relative, for the purposes of an upcoming inquest, I wrote to the Medical Records Officer, stating my request was in accordance with the Data Protection Act. I was able to view the records a week later and make notes from them. There was no charge, but they said if I wanted photocopies I could be charged up to £50. It would probably be quicker for you to write to the Practice Manager at your surgery, along the same lines.
I go to the Brompton & they give you a copy there & then, ditto my local hospital, and when I've requested copies of anything from my surgery I've never had a problem.
