Went to the hospital nutritionist. I thought I would share this with you if you are into healthy eating for your lungs!!๐
I must eat more protein to be stronger this winter. 4 meals a day
Add 4 almonds to my 2 weetabix and semiskimmed lactosefree milk (๐) for breakfast. I am 100% lactose intolerant, I didnโt know until they tested me in August. I think I have told you that already.
Lunch: protein 100/150gr, veg, 3 tbsp of carbo or bread equivalent, olive or rapeseed oil
Afternoon yoghurt, fruit or for supper as hungry
Dinner, 100/150gr protein, veg, little olive oil no carbo.
My problem is the evening: I like my soup and yoghurt with my wholemeal bread and I donโt want to cook a full meal, well there you are but I canโt have anything heavy because it gives me heartburns.
Anyway I will try because I have lost weight really, and my cholesterol is higher due to steroids so time to build up but be careful..Boringggg
I am vegetarian (90%) anyways... protein is pretty easy to add to my diet so I will get on it! I am like you not much for dinner but I normally eat dinner very early like 4 or so. Ill add nuts and yogurt for a night snack. Thanks for the info.
Gosh, where do you peeps find the discipline and time for such complex diets,i admire you all,i have had a buttered roll all day and have no appetite for more.i shall probably have a packet of crisps with my vino this evening and your nutritionists would be doing somersaults of indignation if i was one of their clients.
Before my Emphysema was severe i weighed around 9 stone and with a fairly muscular well worked body.i now weigh 8 stone and all of my weight loss has been muscle and of course my beer belly and love handles have gone and people would pay good money on weight watchers or its equivalent to attain my weight.Ironically i feel fairly healthy!.....................diminutive skis and a fat scruffy
Oh dear Skischool, sounds like a liquid diet to me!^^
Yes, I have also lost some appetite and I am losing the muscle too despite exercising, which is why she wants me to eat more protein..I put on 4lb of muscles since I started with her, a month ago so that was good. Cheered me up.
I mean all that protein is costly, fish 3 times a week at least etc..I make a nice and healthy lentil soup for less!
There is probably as much protein in your healthy lentil soup than most meat and fish dishes Happy Fran plus all the roughage and other good stuff,so rustle me up a nice warm bowl of that soup on this cold and dark evening, only do not stand downwind of me later on lol x
For me it is the opposite! The weight keeps on piling on due to being in this darned chair... I have come to terms with it because hey... I am getting darned old and I am just sick of "trying" to lose weight all the time! I watch both daughters who are constantly trying which makes me realize that it is what it is some of us are just meant to be "fluffy". ๐ท๐ท Not a wine drinker but heard it is good for the heart in moderation. So keep on sipping!
I did ask you where in the UK you live. Love escape to the country. A Brit show that takes perspective home buyers around the country. I think this show has caused "peeps" like me to fall in love with GB. So beautiful over there.
Today I see the lung specialist for what I hopes the last time for 6 months. I guess she figures that I need to be brought up to speed on what's happening but my doctor already has done that. However I do have some questions for her which would be good to get an answer to. Before I go for my specialist appointment I am going to blow her away with garlic breath. Going to my favorite Greek restaurant very close to the hospital meeting a friend there so that will be really nice. Hope this finds you well and Scruffy is being a good girl (no kitty art on the furniture Scruffy.)
enjoy those Koftas and kebabs and aubergines and stuffed vines or whatever my lovely, save a little for the specialist and she/he will not smell your breath lol.i told you before those buyers in the country are not the norm and most of the properties they look at are several hundred thousand pounds to purchase so you will have to flog a lot of your jewelery to afford one,i live near Manchester where the streets are still cobbled and little people wear cloth caps.google an artist called J.S Lowry for pic lol.now stick on topic its happy frans healthy diet today.....skis and scruff xx
I had the veggie dish which was very dissapointing. It looked as if it was a bit old... I forgot to tell the waiter no rice pilaf but the worst of it was all the peas in the ratatouille. Do NOT like peas or lentils! Oh well it was nice to see my artist friend. I don't know why but I must not recieve 1/2 the things you write me! Must be racy things in there and the thought police delete it. No... not you ๐
Linda, I watch those programmes too. Location, Location, Location is my favourite and you would really enjoy the antics of Kirsty and Phil, the presenters. I love the UK countryside and cities too and we just had a great road trip to the north of England ( and a day trip to Edinburgh) in the middle of September. It's a beautiful country, rich houses or poor.
Fluffy! ๐๐ I just love that, much more lovable and kind than other terminology. Going to pass that one on to my 'slightly' fluffy daughter - in the hope that she'll be less stressed thinking of herself in those terms - rather than 'overweight'. Even the word is burdensome - whereas fluffy is warm, light, and cuddly - so much nicer, so thank you for that.
Wish I could come cook a nice big yummy meal for you and Fran. Also wish I could pass on 25 lbs each to the two of you. Losing our appetites come with getting older too don't forget that too. It's funny coz evetytime I feel sick I just like to cook or bake (which I am pitiful at!) Eating what I cook can be a pain. Left overs just sit in the fridge and become a science experiment...
Haha..sounds tasty!! Healthy eating all the time is so boring, and food is such a personal thing..
Well Iโve got the guidelines anyway..and my monthly appointment, then she sends her report in to the doctor..Next time is December 8th! She said we will talk about Christmas!
I get fortified yoghurts and yoghurt drinks on prescription which give me 300 cals per day.
left hospital in 2013 weighing 6 stone 2, weighed at hospital last week ( appt with Dietician/nutritionist)
and have gone up to 7 stone 3..........
My appetite is variable, sometimes 2 days in a row and cannot face food......but usually just small portions, too easy to feel bloated with restricted breathing.........Been eating OK last few months, which is a good thing........
I eat fish, mussels, prawns, red meat, white meat. roasted and steamed veg, salads, eggs, proper butter, full fat milk, double cream, white bread, wholemeal bread, chinese food, full english breakfasts, crumpets, pastries pies, cakes and buns, fish and chips, stews, casseroles, spuds, boiled mashed, baked roasted etc. lots of Brie, Danish Blue, Camembert, Goats cheese, olives, tomatoes, pickles, chutneys, picalilli, etc.
Sunday roasts, with pork beef or roast chicken.
Fruit pies, apple/fruit crumbles, ginger cakes, coffee& walnut, choc cake, curd tarts, cheesecake, doughnuts, fruit loaf,
Probably more that will come to mind later........
Yesterday had fortified yoghurt for breakfast, Danish Blue cheese with chutney and cherry tomatoes in Scottish roll for lunch, and for evening meal, home made beef and ale stew ( slow cooked 8 hours in oven) home made dumplings and Maris Piper baked spuds, followed by Toffee cheesecake............
And it still took four and a half years to put on one stone one ounce............
Fran, I'm tickled pink by the detail of the 4 almonds. Not a handful or a sprinkling ; not 3 or 5 - just 4, all weighed, measured and correct. Talk about exact
Putting on 4 pounds of muscle is an impressive result so your dietician must be giving good advice.
i don't have a problem maintaining weight but trying to be more mindful of including a little protein as often as possible.
The hospital food is okay for dinner but evening teas are a disaster - sausage rolls, potato croquettes etc. I think you'd find a UK hospital trip a bit difficult now if you're accustomed to hospital in France. Are hospitals better in France, do you think ?
Sorry I fell asleep..Oh dear, yes I remember when I was in last time๐Raided the kiosk downstairs..
It is a myth..Hospitals are poor and old-looking in France, well in Paris and Lyons where I have been, ancient! But the food was ok..ressources are depleted, doctors and nurses have to go on strike..But the care is good once you are in. I havenโt been to Lille, it is supposed to be the top hospital in the country.
Last January was the first time, I visited Lyons Louis Pradel Hospital where they treat lung and cardio. I had to take a taxi because it was way out in some suburb. I got there it was really rough looking, I had waited 5 months for the appointment. I thought omg..
I had to pick a number to wait for my admission labels, finally had blood tests, did my pfts in the morning and met the Consultant after lunch, the top in the country for rare lung diseases. And I saw this wonderful man so human, so compassionate for a good hour, in a closet!
I thought it was well worthwhile and I told him so because I moved to Switzerland and here I had waited 3 months for my first appointment, they treated me so coldly and I never got a report nor did my GP. Again people go to private clinics. Private insurance is compulsory here there is no public healthcare. My insurance doesnโt cover private health care. What they call complementary insurance. I was refused because of I have a rare disease. So the mentality is different. Thatโs why I go to France.
Although for emergencies I donโt have a choice I go to the local hospital. But just to be seen and pick up a prescription. I must say they did save Dadโs life he was in intensive care for 3 weeks. Then they sent him to a private nursing home.
But if it wasnโt for that emergency doctor in France, when I was at my Mumโs and I stopped breathing, who sent me for a CT scan
I wouldnโt have known I had LAM. So pure luck to fall on someone competent who had a hint..
I attended the Charing Cross Hospital
many times for spirometry. I was diagnosed with asthma and they didnโt look any further. Just kept on giving me clarithromycin and steroids and change my inhaler for the latest generic on the market.
No I think you are lucky to have the NHS. It just needs to be properly funded. Doctors need to be given time to make a proper diagnosis. And communication, after care is important.
I suppose there is good and bad in all country's health systems and sometimes it's like a lottery. You can be lucky and receive great care or be unlucky with overworked staff and under-developed resources. But always, it seems we must be our own advocate and keep pushing for the right treatments.
You are absolutely right but it can be difficult to manage. Some of us may not have that strength to push on, and even personally I feel sometimes I cannot be bothered you know.
Which is why I wished that health systems were more compassionate or empathetic letโs say but I am an idealist ๐
We can thank this type of forum where we can help each other and helplines..
At present just the IV antibioticTazocin, 3 times a day plus steroids and my usual nebs. Maybe when they've got the test results back, they might make changes.Progressis slow so far but that's pR for the course when I have a bad exacerbation.
I totally know exactly how you feel. When I was at the Artisan Fair the other day I had to ask this woman next to me to unscrew 2 bottles of water for me brother! I used to be so strong too. But you know what I've got to start working out on my upper body. So let's make a pact to do just 5 minutes to start off with a day and then we'll work our way up. Have we got a deal?
๐๐ you are kind..I have my rehab programme so I do 30mn of crosstrainer or 30 mn swimming every morning 7 days a week..the physiotherapist told me the weakest muscles in a patient with lung disease are the quadriceps..so much to build up my dear xx
So great that you have that. So I will carry on and any gold nuggets you glean from her pass it on. I had no idea that was the weakest part ( muscle ) for us. So what do you do for that? Linda
Treadmill, bike, step and for the arms they make me do hercules i pull a bar with weights vertically and horizontally.. I can do 6 kgs.. the other ladies are on 8 to 10!!
Just on a catch up here...I had to laugh out loud when I read your post!! ๐คฃ๐ I thought I was the only one with nutcrackers at the ready for various bottle openings!! Great minds think alike.....Iโve always liked nuts but theyโre mostly too robust for my crowns these days!! ๐ ๐ท
Yikes! 200-300g of protein a day? Happylondon, I'm not sure what your nutritionist is thinking but your body cannot make use of that amount. I would cut it in half at least, and save yourself some money!
