Can't breathe
Hi any healing done by stopping smoking should have been done in the 3 years since you packed it up. I presume you have copd or another lung disease? Smoking can mask symptoms and also it can stop some of the bugs going into your system. When you stop this is removed and you can get more infections afterwards.
Obviously the more infections you have the more you risk further damage to your lungs. Stopping can because of this slightly lower your lung function on a permanent basis but not stopping can cause quick acceleration so you have done the best thing even if it doesn't seem like it at the time.
I presume your doctor is investigating? Have you had any spirometry tests done in the last 3 years? If your FEV1 is lower then this could be the reason for your increased breathing difficulties.
I really hope you get to the bottom and feel better asap.
What is fev1 I'm just the same as lilac lil my levels are good but I can't breathe
I am repeating what I have heard others say on here lots of times and I also know this from past experience. If you stay round a bit longer you might learn something too!
If you read my replies again you will notice I am not diagnosing anything but am suggesting reasons for it which is what the poster asked for. I also asked if they had seen a doctor. We are allowed to put links on here too.
I like your reply you said what I was thinking ππ
Yes I appreciate your input I have had Asthma my whole life I smoked 50 years I quit smoking three years ago I got a severe case of RA after I quit I've had a lung doctor for eight years I get CT scans Every year on my lungs I get all the lung testing every year, he always says I have asthma and now after I quit he says COPD and empysema and he just did a pet scan, shows no mass, The first month I quit smoking I could breathe so good, I don't think I've ever remembered breathing like that but after that month it has just gotten harder and harder and harder to breathe I was just wondering if other people had the same experience
Thanks Rena
Hi, I quit smoking 9 years ago. The first year or so I did feel much better. After about 5 or 6 years I gradually became shorter of breath. When I would carry something I became VERY short of breath. I had a CAT scan done for a 10 year study at a university & was diagnosed with moderate emphysema. My lungs will never get better. I am on Advair which does help with SOB. I exercise every day. Have a healthy diet. And try to stay away from germs. Slowing the progression is the goal. Take care & find a good doc! Gayle
You are more than welcome Rena. I am sure you will get others coming in tomorrow as most of us lungies are early to bed and early to rise.
COPD is unfortunately s I'm sure you know a progressive disease but by giving up smoking you have given yourself every chance which is great.
How long did you smoke?
Lilaclil how long did you smoke and how long have you quit?
What is fev1 can someone tell me please
