In reality it means nothing. It would depend on your age, weight and height and what scale they are using. I have seen reports of people having a lung test age of 120 years but are still walking around with few problems.

I am 84 and I can do 401 litres/min and FEV1 of 1.91

The test results are useful for a guide to a professional but don't get too worried about them.

My results last time told me I had lungs of a 91 year old, I feel OK and can do the shopping, cleaning and gardening

Try not to worry to much, it does sound scary when you are first given the numbers, my lung age is 147, but the nurse told me that lungs are able to function for 160 years, so not to worry. I am not exactly speedy but am able to function well, walking 5 miles plus each day, and able with medication to live a reasonably active life.

Reassuring to know lungs can last for 160 years, that should see me out! Thanks for that Sukee.

I will never know why the medical profession give spirometry results to patients with copd as an age. Absolutely pointless and scary. As someone who has bronchiectasis no one has ever done this to me. I always ask and are given my results as predicted and would stop them in their tracks if they ever attempted to give them t me as an age. This approach really ticks me off.

As has been said it is meaningless and Pete is right it is just a guide.

You might want to ask them what your predicted FEV1 is - they should give you this as a percentage.

Odd how here in my last spirometer test I was given, My results was reported to have 56% lung function....the therapist told me I have a 56% lung function (nothing about the age of). When I ask the meaning, I was told it means I have the function of just over half of a normal Lungs ability to function.. .

am looking forward to a couple more months or the next Spirometer test (PFT Pulmonary Function Test. My next trip to my Primary GP at The VA Hospital, I will be requesting Pulmonary Rehab therapy. They will perform a current PFT to see where my Lung function is and if it has increased or decreased;;

I am still going to try and get the Private Messaging figured out and contact a couple of you that has requested that I do..wanted you to know I am not ignoring you nor have I forgotten you.

I have COPD and have never been told results as an age. I have 40% lung function but it dosnt stop me from doing things. These are just numbers. It's how you feel and how you cope that matters .

When I was first diagnosed in my 50's I was told I had the lungs of an 89 year old!

I've never been told my lung function in terms of age either, but my FEV1 results hovers around in the mid-20s. I get around okay, a bit breathless at times but otherwise just fine; I'll never run the 4 minute mile...., but then I never ran it before..., now did I ??

I'm 74..., and going for more..!!!

Regards,

Duncan

Duncan, you make it look as if many of us still have hopes of being here for some time to come. I turn 70 in September and planning some road trips in the next few years,, both in Motor Home and on My Motorcycle...

Thanks

I was told they could not find any trace of my lungs at all and was immediately transfered to a local Aquarium where i swim about happily when not doing silly things like this on my laptop.Ignore all figures unless they come with an explanation from a consultant.good luck and do not fret.there is plenty of room in my pond...xx

I was told by the respiratory nurse that the lung age figure is just used to scare smokers into giving up.
