Lung age

A little confused today I have been to Chest Clinic today, glanced at my spiro results Which says my lung age is 80 yr old ( I am 65 ) what does that mean?. I should have asked doctor but forgot

Hi this sounds worse than it is but is nothing to be really worried about. I was diagnosed with mild copd aged 56 and my lung age was 89! All it means is you have the typical lung function of someone aged 80 but that's par for the course with lung disease. Lung function naturally declines a bit with age but not drastically. x

IM 69 RIDE AN EXERCISE BIKE EVERY OTHER DAY FOR 30 MINUTES IT TAKES ME 15 MINUTES TO GET HEART RATE INTO CARDIO ZONE I STOP RIDING AFTER 30 MINUTES NOT BECAUSE IM OUT OF BREATH BUT BECAUSE ITS BORING NOW IM TOLD MY LING AGE IS 89, ALSO FREEDIVE AND TAKE WALKS ON OFF DAYS WHAT DOES 89 LUNG AGE MEAN I QUIT SMOKING 32 YEARS AGO AFTER 24 YRS OF SMOKING

Not much tbh, it’s used as a way to get smokers to give up. There’s many other measurements that dictate lung health.

I am pretty sure lung age is almost meaningless. I am 44 and have the lung age of 113 year old! It was frightening at first to see such a high figure but all it does is give me and my friends a laugh.

I don't mean to be facetious - I just try not to think about that number too much. I expect it means you have the lungs of someone that age. We all lose lung function naturally as we get older but those of us with lung disease lose it quicker. So its probably an easy guide to the extent of the lung damage we have.

When I found my lungs were like a person of 103 (I was only 58at the time) I told my best friend she said "oh good they match your face now" I laughed so hard tears ran down my leg

Good Lord, where do they come up with these figures. I was told when I was about 37 that my lung age was 80--that's when I went to a doc and found out I had asthma. They told me not to worry about it. Then a few yrs. ago, when I was about 68, I was told I had a lung age of 90. It's probably junk science. I'm still alive and 78 now!

Had mine done yesterday it said lung age 111yrs I'm 58. Xx

I so wish they wouldn't do this - it really annoys me. Luckily (for them) nobody has ever told me my spirometry results in 67 years in lung age. Predicted % is much more preferable. Is it a scare tactic I wonder.

I have a family member who's 20 years old and has the lung age of 167. What could cause this and what are some symptoms that could possible arise?

did you ever find out if there were issues from those results? i just left to doctor today, i went to get prescribed Wellbutrin to help me quit smoking as i have tried e-cigs, the gum, and even a hypnotist. i am 27 and have been smoking for about 10 years. they told me today my lung life age is 80.. but if i quit smoking it will improve. i am absolutely petrified and devastated now as i hope i can quit because i am truly scared for my life.

Quit now and have fun. I worked in care and visited a guy who was still smoking a pack a day at 94! Smoking for 10 years, that's nothing, quit now and let your lungs heal. 👍
