I have IPF and despite this, I am hoping to go on holiday abroad perhaps a cruise, but so far have had trouble obtaining travel insurance, could anyone recommend an insurance company who would cater for my condition?

Hi -we have just been on a cruise came back last week, and my husband had a diagnosis, at the time, of pulmonary fibrosis, and we quoted that to them when we bought the travel insurance and it was with Staysure. Since returning the consultant is not sure this is the diagnosis but I can assure you that this was provided as one of our myriad of health problems, we both have when we bought the insurance. Also given that there are people on the forum who have been diagnosed with PF for over 10 years I am not sure just how 'terminal' an illness it actually is? They never said anything to us about it being a terminal illness, when we were buying the insurance.

Hi Ron, you could try the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA). Their website is biba.org.uk, telephone [phone] or email [e-mail]

As the name says, they are brokers, so you give them all your details, then they do the hard work of finding a company who are willing to insure you. It was many years ago that I used them, but I hope they are still as helpful.

Are you using oxygen? What medication are you taking? How old are you? Have you been hospitalised in the past year? These are all questions relevant to a travel insurance quotation. But, unfortunately, even if you do get accepted I fear that it is going to cost you a lot of money.

I booked a river cruise in Europe with AMA waterways and got travel insurance that I can cancel for any reason but I had to get it the same day I booked the cruise. It looks like I may have to cancel and forfeit my insurance money but I will still get most things back. There were no pre-existing conditions and I don't need a medical reason to cancel but it cost me $800 for myself and $800 for each person that was going with me

That sounds really very expensive. Pity I had not posted the list earlier to this group. I hope between all who have contributed we will be able to help everyone from being charged such excessive amounts for Insurance cover in the future. I wish I could remember the Insurance company I used to use for Travel. I use to take out a whole year and it was REALLY cheap. I was very ill even then but I wasn't on Oxygen. If I find it I will add it to the list. I did have to claim from that company and they were excellent.

Got my husband who has IPF and is on ambulatory oxygen insured with Fish Insurance for around £126. I was included in the policy as well

I have several chronic conditions including AF, COPD, Barrett's Oesophagus and Diverticulosis. My wife also has several conditions, all the reputable mainstream insurers wanted silly money (£1,200 upwards) for two weeks cover so we gave up on foreign holidays. However I have since discovered INSUREWITH.COM, who have quoted £325.00 admittedly with an excess of £500 if we need to claim for pre-existing conditions but £75 for new problems - Tenerife here we come!

Fish insurance.I have IPF a recent heart attack,a recent broken shoulder,You do not say it's terminal as loads live past the 3 to 5 years and most terminal illnesses mean less than 6 months,I've just returned from the USA with my hubby who is diabetic,we got cover for 12 months worldwide for a little over £400 I do have a large excess of £900 if I ever had to claim.I never book if I think I am too ill to travel.Sooki

I have emphysema, osteoporosis, COPD & bone cancer, I cannot find an insurer that will quote me, espaecially for numerous trips out of the country

A couple of Travel Insurance companies who appear to accept people with pre-existing conditions. Please be aware that just because an Insurance Company may accept you and offer you a policy that does not mean that you will be covered for pre-existing conditions. Always disclose ALL past and current conditions otherwise you may find your policy will not cover you as expected. AND ALWAYS read the small print to make sure you are covered for everything you need to be included.

Please note I have no experience of using the following companies and it will be up to individuals to do their own research and to only proceed if they are happy that each of the companies will meet their personal needs.

BLF don’t have a list of insurance companies, but other people have found insurers by searching on the internet under ‘travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions’. We can’t single out any particular company as being better than another, but we do have a link with an insurance company called Fish Insurance. I see that Sooki has also mentioned them.

BLF are not recommending them and we can’t promise they’ll be the cheapest but we do know they have a lot of experience providing insurance to people with pre-existing medical conditions.

For every policy they issue, a donation will be made to British Lung Foundation.

I have copd and IPF and had used the same brokers for years but last year the prices leapt up to just under £1000.00 So I took to asking at my restart class about it. A lady who has had a double lung transplant said she uses a company called Insurance With. they advised I only buy insurance for every trip not yearly. So my 5 day trip to Spain cost me £76.44. They were very helpful not pushy at all, and I did it all over the phone.

There telephone number is 0203 829 3875. They have a 14 day cooling off period and will refund in full.

I have IPF and flew to California in February. I found insurance was really expensive but Boots covered me as a member of a family of three for £261 for a month of which £127.40 was the additional premium for my condition.

Well worth trying them out.
