Hi, I am not being rude, but does anyone else suffer with burping a lot?

For the last month, I burp a lot each day? Is it related I wonder?

Yes I did - but there a few possible reasons for us COPDers.

A) Over inflating lungs may put pressure on stomache - I don't know for certain that's possible, seems logical though.

B) For certain: Side effects from medication - Bronchodilators work by relaxing the smooth muscle in your airways but the effect can spill over to effect similar muscle in your digestive system - so can have an effect on your peristalsis (digestive contractions) system and causes bloating/belching. I eventually found it is made worse when combined with statins, with which it's also a known side effect.

C) Belching/nausea is a symptom of acid reflux.

Made worse by the usual sustpects, green vegetables, coffee, alcohol, chocolate, spicy food, eating late etc

Fits your possibilities ?

I have gastric reflux same effect - earlier than COPD - so it could be that? talk to doctor and or try Lanzaprozil (UK name). If offerede gastroscopy avoid if possible as I think that made my reflux worse (poss isibly by stressing abdominal sphincter).

yes, I have been getting that and did wonder if it was related. Boy does this thing affect the rest of our bodies too.

Thank God it isn't just me with the burping bug! I can honestly say before COPD I rarely burped, now I have burping not sneezing fits! Interesting to read the theories as to why but great to know it isn't just me.

I burp from both ends, usually involuntary.

The pleasure's all mine, I assure you.

So many of us with COPD suffer from Gastro Oesophageal Reflux Disease.

It's one of those things that seems to go hand in hand with COPD. A gastroscopy will prove the presence of absence of GORD (in America GERD). I was diagnosed with a mild case of it so it's not too troublesome.

A teaspoon of Fennel seeds, pop into a tea infuser, the silicon ones are quite good, place in a cup. Pour on very hot water and allow to steep for a few minutes. Sip gently when cool enough to do so. Tastes mildly of aniseed and works wonders. Take after meals or as required. Hope you find some relief, fennel works for me. The seeds can also be chewed but I prefer the tea. :)

Hi Wisper do you grind the fennel seeds or leave whole ?

Leave them whole, I drink the tea with them left in the strainer and then dispose of the seeds when I have finished drinking. They do swell a little so don't fill to the top. I would be interested if they work well for you too. Oh and if you don't like the taste you can add a little honey or sweetener of choice :)

Hi I am a nuturopath. Commonly it is a sign that your digestive system is not working properly.this could be due to unbalanced yeasts. We are meant to have yeast in our gut but when it becomes out of balance it can cause a whole lot of problems including belching and gas. Also low HCL in the stomach can cause problems too. I would suggest trying the candida test which is spitting into water and the HCL one which involves bicarbonate of soda and water. Both can be found on the net to describe details and what to look for.

Had the same problem myself. Went to the doctor and said to him "can you give me something for the wind?" - He handed me a kite!

I've never been a burpy person, since being diagnosed with COPD I am. The awful thing about it is there's no warning that its going to happen!!! Lol
