Can people tell me about their recovery time from VATS Bullectomy, I had this done in June along with the Talc Pleurodesis & am wondering how long before I feel relatively normal?

Oh gosh June is not all that long ago is it? I don't know about the procedures you have had done but 6 weeks is a short time to want to be back to normal. If you had to have a general anaesthetic then that can take at least 6 weeks to get out of your system. Your body has taken a bit of a beating and is in shock I suppose so give it time. Best person to ask is your GP or your consultant when you next see him.

hi I had this done 2 years ago it should have been key hole but because lung was so bad they cut from back under arm to the front 30 odd staples .I still get pain on that side funny sensations ect was told it was because surgeon had to cut threw mussels and nerves and it all has to repair and its easy to get a bit of nerve damage . did you have key hole or was you cut like me ? . hopefully you will recover quickly but it is only a short time sinch you had op and it is a major op so give your self time don't over do things and get plenty of rest having said that you must exercise as much as you can

Yes I had keyhole surgery I think I'm just very impatient! Many thanks for the reply

your welcome by what my consultant told me key hole is a lot less invasive so fingers cross it will heal quickly I think we are all a bit impatient when we have an op for us to feel better quickly but it really is just giving your self time to heal good luck and take care

hiya imp, not sure about the vats bullectomy bit, think it might be a more modern version of what I had done in 1989. Was having bilateral spontaneous pneumothorax, and had both lungs operated on at the same time by going in through my sternum.

Then had the talc stuff. Even then I was out of hospital in a week, was back at work within about 8 weeks, tho' that was probably a bit early cos I had a manual job, but for me, sometimes the quicker you start doing normal things the quicker you get better, and I did get better. health problems since then, but they stemmed from Rheumatoid arthritis 10 yrs ago.

Was told to try and walk every day building up to a mile, it was slow work but I did it and it makes you feel better

Eat Healthily, drink water, take light exercise a little and often. If you have problems with anything just take it easy and do it little by little. Moderation in all things as my Dad used to say.

Hi Imp,

I hesitated to write about my VATS experience because you had thanked everyone for their positive experiences, and I felt that mine was not totally positive, but, on reflection I think I did not have a realistic idea of how things would go.

I had it by keyhole surgery and everything was fine till they removed the dressing too quickly, and found out I was allergic to it. It was removed the day that President Sarkosi visited the hospital I was in, and all the staff were rushing around so that they could watch him arrive. My skin took weeks to feel normal again.

I expected the pain from where they had put the scope and light. I also had Talc Pleurodesis, and that worked! I took 2-3 months to feel I could move around normally, if a bit slowly. Unfortunately, I started having spasms of pain at the op. site...a lot at the beginning, and now I still get them if I overdo anything physical. I now realise that it must be adhesions, and I just live with them.

7 years on, I would still have the op, but be prepared for a more lengthy recovery. I think I had high expectations of my recovery ability. Take things easy! Lolly. x

Hi Lolly thanks so much for your reply it is nice to receive a reply that covers the other end of the spectrum, my "wounds" are healing fine its just the twinges/pain inside my chest that bothers me, but of course it is early days yet!!
