I have just been told that my lung function is down to 16%, the doctor tells me that I shouldn't be walking!
Does anyone know much about this subject to guide me please.
Thank you, Eric

Ah well, all the guides say you shouldn't, ergo everyone believes you shouldn't! It's great to prove them wrong isn't it?! My lung function was 19% eighteen months ago and I still drive, am not on oxygen and the guides say I should be bedridden and about to pop my clogs. Just keep breathing x
That is what I intend to do but they said no rehabilitation just walking! Thanks
scrobbitty.
I've got a treadmill for those grotty outdoor days and that helps me. I do breathing exercises and do weights for my arms (only recently started because arms are like twigs!). If you haven't done rehab, I would still advise the talking bits even if you can't do the exercises - it may throw up things you didn't know. x
A bee's wings are too small for it to fly, fortunately the bee doesn't know this...lol. Just keep on walking. xxx
MMmm interesting way to put it but nice thank you
Poems thats so cute and so true! Walk that walk Fox. You know you can do it. Nobody knows your body like you.

P.s - theres some pretty amazing
people on this site!!
Hi Eric, Well that must have been a shock for you! Have they offered you further care - is this from your GP or a consultant? How do you feel? Are you coping ok?
I care for my husband who has severe COPD and he doesnt see a consultant but has been referred to the specialist respiratory team (you have to ask for a referral from the doctor) and they have been very helpful.
It might be a good idea to talk to the helpline and ask their advise You can call the helpline on 03000 030 555 Lines are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
Overall though I have decided to ignore the numbers - surely quality of life is more relevant. Take good care of yourself, TAD xxx
Yes I have been told to keep in touch with the respiratory nurses on a regular basis I was also told to stop the rehabilitation with them as too much strain on the ole ticker.
I am ok just trying to accept all this hence why I am here today. Thank you so much for your import TAD
hi eric ive known a couple years ive had copd but wasn't until December when I had my first appointment at resparatory clinic, and consultant told me I had very severe copd with fev1 of 18%. I still work but just part time and my job is supervisory so just walking about checking things.
things can be hard at times with breathlessness but just have do things like walking slower, the weather doesn't help so hopefully that get better sooner.
I also had my first session at pulmonary rehab yesterday and that wasn't as bad as I expected, they don't ask you do anything that you cant do.
so just do anything at your own pace and see how goes.

I have been advised many a time that, exercise is a must and something you should keep on trying to do. I find your doctors advise strange. I am down to 19%, 15 years after being diagnosed
What has been said already is so right it is not what the books claim it is the person in front of them that is the proof. I have a good at rest O2 Sat but once I do anything I drop down like a stone. My Peak flow of 350 at rest is good? but as I have RLD should not be taken as benchmark! They do not know it all. But we know our limits and should carry on until it changes but still carry on!
Be well
