I dont blame you for feeling sorry for yourself - I feel sorry for you!!! My husband seems not to have been well now for months - infection, cold, exacerbation (for no reason)! AND the tinnitus - I suffer with that occasionally and it has been really bad these last few days. Very difficult to concentrate on anything with all that noise going on. I am very irritating though and like to look for positives (drives my husband mad when he is feeling down!!!) - the days are longer, it seems a bit warmer and the daffs are starting to coming through. Spring will be in full force very soon - life will look brighter. Look after yourself, take good care lots of love TAD xxx

yep mine comes and goes - or is it that I can block it most times - I feel pressure can set it off and believe it or not mine was worse when I used to steam over a bowl to clear my chest (I do not do that now) and touch wood have not had bad times since .... I hope you an block it out soon xxxxx

i use an mp3 player to play a little easy listening music ,which helps: plenty of distractions through the day , sleep time is the hardest

I think the tinnitus on top of the exacerbations would get anyone down whit. I care for Pete who has had a rough time of it lately but is improving. It is I who have the tinnitus though and I cope with it because I will not allow it to get me down but if you are ill on top of that, things are not so easy.

You have every right to feel sorry for yourself and I hope you can get some good advice on what to do. My tinnitus is a low hissing sound most of the time but it does get worse in the evenings and at night. Good luck to you and thinking of you. xxxx

mine is like when you put a shell over your ear to listen to the sea, only louder

Yes, that sounds about right especially in the evening and at night. I use ear plugs too which seems to make the tinnitus louder but I just go off to sleep. I must block it out somehow. Have you spoken to your GP about it? or you could look things up online and see if there is help out there. I do wish you well. xxxx

I think it was a bit. I must have read it in one of those long vitamin posts the other day - or, in one of your added links. I recall it wasn't the main point of the post. I'm annoyed I can't remember. I can't get the search bar above to work for me lately.

I used to experience tinnitus. Whenever it was quiet I 'heard' a constant very high pitched eeeeeeeeeee sound. Went away sometime in the last few years. Could be that's down to something(s) in my supplement intake . . .

Mine was a sort of swishing noise for a couple of years. Later I had Labyrinthitis which also died out & I haven't had it for years now.

On reflection I wonder if I've just become so used to it that I've learned to ignore it, like a ticking clock or the sensation of clothes against my skin.

Doing a search along these lines I came across this:

american-hearing.org/disord...

Quote:

'. . . We do know that individuals who focus on the tinnitus and listen to it constantly seem to aggravate the degree to which it is bothersome and seem to enhance the abnormal perception of the sound. Therefore, it is very important to understand that the individual is very much in control of the degree to which the tinnitus is distracting or annoying. We know of people who have focused on and listened to tinnitus until it dominated their lives. Most people with tinnitus just ignore it after a while. Ignoring the perception is very effective in minimizing disruption of thought and daily life. Studies have shown that there is not a correlation between the loudness or pitch of the tinnitus and the degree to which it bothers the individual. Controlling the perception by ignoring it is such a simple and effective approach for most individuals that it is the first line of coping with tinnitus for the vast majority of people.'

whit,,, i know the feeling ,, i'm much the same, getting over infection after infection [apart from that tinnitus, which must be really annoying] it most certainly gets you down. there are times when it hits you more, then other times it passes slightly, i find trying to get some fresh air, a friendly chat etc, can help quite a bit,, but as with many folks with long term illnesses , depression could play a part, maybe best explain things to your g.p , its rotten like that whit, i hope you get some better advice than mine ,, but hope these feelings leave you soon :) ,,, spring/ summer on the way, lets try look on the positive side, as at the moment i think these thoughts are keeping me going ,, take care buddy, hope this passes soon,

kind regards jimmy

Hello Whit, I would feel like you if I had had a series of exacerbations, they are not easy to bounce back from. I've had continuous tinnitus since having three operations on my ear over twelve years ago, in the last operation they removed more of the middle ear bones and scraped the skull to try to stop the infection ( it can get to your brain they said )

I can't hear too well but the worst thing is I get a thudding sound from time to time on top of the tinnitus and that drives me crazy :( great post, I will try the recommended vitamins but I have learnt to 'switch off the sound in my mind' just not ignoring it is not an option, thought Stilltruckins quote interesting :) I try not to think about it at all, just thinking about it makes it seem ever louder! Hope you feel better and better with each day, no more bad chest, hugs huff xxx

Tinittus can be caused by a lack of air pressure in the Eustachian tube. Squeeze nostrils together and pressurise the throat. It can also be a symptom off an acoustic neuroma (inner-ear tumour) so get an MRI scan done ASAP if there are any other symptoms such as numbness on the affected side of the head or loss of balance. Living up on hilltops can also cause tinittus and there is more about it all on a-new-shape.co.uk for free if you click on the icons.
