I bought an enormous chicken in Tesco's yesterday for a real knock down bargain price and it said on the label that it was bred and packed in Ireland...not a foreign chicken then.
And I decided the time has come to be thrifty...chop its legs off...and its wings and then the breasts...cook the rest of the carcase and pick the bits off for sandwiches. So that'd be three suppers and a couple of lunches.
But...our knives are blunt. So I ferreted about in the drawer and found the steel and sharpened away with great enthusiasm...it hadn't made a great deal of difference actually but it did manage to cut the breasts off...more or less.
Then the legs...for heavens sakes...there was I, sawing away, while gripping the slippery slimy skin and getting absolutely nowhere...so back to the steel and another session of sharpening and it helped a bit but then there was this sort of sinewy part that refused to part company from the body...so I tried the kitchen scissors. They're not sharp either and after squeezing as though my life depended upon getting the feckin' leg off, I gave up and shoved the remains into the oven...
