Himalayan Salt pipe.

I know us with copd do clutch at straws sometimes and look for what might make life a little better. I have seen an advert for Himalayan salt pipes saying how they help those like us with copd. Do they work? Has anyone here tried them?

I am on a pulmonary rehabilitation course and this week this question was raised with the excellent respiratory consultant. She said that salt pipes did help some people and would do no harm so good luck with trying one. They help with clearing mucous so would be particularly helpful for people with bronchiectasis.

I would discuss this with your nurse or doctor before making any moves to aquire one don't forget salt can and does push up the blood pressure.

Hi derrylynne

I am a great fan of nasal douching! I have had many different types over the years.

I find them so useful if I have been in a dusty environment. You wouldn't believe how cleansing the experience can be. At first it is not a pleasant experience but you get used to it and the results are worth it.

personally I wouldn't be concerned about the salt issue as you are just rinsing out your nasal passage not ingesting the salt.

I am currently without one at the moment and used a sports bottle with a little salted water last night. Basically that is all it is - a vehicle to slowly drip a solution through your nasal passage.

Another trick is cupping your hands together and snorting the water up - best done in the shower! I picked that up from the internet - but cant manage to do it myself.

Any way good luck & kindest regards

You don't use a salt pipe for your nasal passages ,you breathe it into your lungs

Hi, My husband did try to use one about four years ago but it didnt really help him. It seemed to me that it should but he hated the taste of salt and just didnt get on with it! Having said that a friend took her son to the salt mines in some european country for his asthma with fantastic results. Hope you are keeping well xx

One of our members reported on salt pipe helping a lot recently ... so i am using one and pretty sure it's helping me. I also take herbs prescribed by a medical herbalist.

I have mild copd. I've been using a salt pipe every day for three or four weeks now and it's helping me a lot, in particular i've stopped coughing and it helps loosen the mucus. A combination of using the salt pipe for 20 min every day and swimming for 30 min every day for the last month or so has led to me almost completely stopping taking my meds. Good luck!

That is great Frances21. I really just want something that will help the gunk and to stop my nose getting blocked. Decided to send off for one today. The worse that will happen is it does nothing for me and I wasted £23 so worth a go. I am not going to get to stopping my meds - on o2 with severe emphysema, but anything that helps. :)

good luck with it - sorry about the emphysema, my mum had that. hope the salt pipe helps a bit with the gunk! i find it helps me breathe deeply too, which seems to raise my oxygen levels. :)

Just wanted to clear something up a lot of people are confusing a salt pipe with a nasal douche they are two completely different things.A salt pipe you put in your mouth containing dry salt,a nasal douche is salt mixed with boiled water which you use to clean your nasal passages(make sure you leave warer to cool to room temperature)

Hi Derrylynne

I am so sorry for confusing this with the nasal douching technique and thank you to Jeanielee for pointing out my mistake. I am only human!

I found this link useful in my education salitair.co.uk/product-info/ - it explains all about what they are and what they can do.

Kindess always

Yes I have read up on what the companies say it does. But alway better to find out from those that use it. Some good replies to my post here and many thanks to all that have replied. I am going to try one. And will come back in a couple of months to let you all know if it helped or not...
