I JUST THOUGHT I WOULD TELL YOU OF MY NIGHTMARE LAST THURSDAY,I LIVE ALONE, I HAVE END STAGE COPD,GETTING THROUGH THE LAST STAGES OF AN INFECTION, ON OXYGEN, FUSED SPINE [A.S] HEART FAILURE, MANY UNDERLYING ILLNESSES,,,,,

[I LIKE CHEERING PEOPLE UP:) LOL]

ON GETTING UP THURS MORN, I NOTICED THERE WAS NOT MUCH URINE IN MY NIGHT BAG, I THEN HAD A FEW CUPS OF TEA, DONE MY MEDS AND NEBS ETC. DRUNK SOME WATER [AS I WAS TOLD TO DO],, THEN TOOK MY WATER TABLET,,,, WOW, I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED PAIN LIKE IT, GETTING WORSE BY THE MINUTE, I WAS DOUBLED UP IN UTTER AGONY, BREATHING WENT, SWEAT DRIPPED FROM ME,, I HONESTLY THOUGHT "THIS IS IT THIS TIME JIMMY",, I PHONED THE DISTRICT NURSE,,BL,,,,,,,Y ANSWER MACHINE, THEY WERE ON THERE DINNER HOUR!!!!! IT WAS 12 AM BY THIS TIME, I THEN PHONED THE SURGERY, THEY SAID THEY WOULD SEND SOMEONE ASAP, STILL NO ONE CAME,BY THIS TIME I WAS DOUBLED UP ON THE FLOOR,REALLY IN SOME STATE, I THEN WAS FORCED TO PHONE 999, THE AMBULANCE AND DISTRICT NURSE CAME TOGETHER, THEY FITTED A NEW CATHETER, AND WERE AMAZED TO TAKE,,, TWO AND A HALF LITRS OF URINE FROM ME,,,,THEY COULDNT BELIEVE IT, NEVER IN MY LIFE HAVE I HAD SO MUCH RELIEF, ALMOST INSTANTLY,, ANYWAY THEY TOOK ME IN FOR OBSERVATION,AS MY BLOOD PRESSURE HAD DROPPED SO FAST, THEY KEPT ME IN OVERNIGHT [THEY WANTED TO KEEP ME LONGER] ,

BUT A WARNING FOR ANYONE HAVING TO HAVE A CATHETER, IF YOU THINK THE URINE IS NOT QUITE FLOWING AS IT SHOULD,, DO NOT HESITATE, PHONE RIGHT AWAY, DONT DO AS I DID, AND WAIT A WHILE. AS IT IS VERY MUCH LIFE THREATENING, ESPECIALLY WITH COPD. OR HEART FAILURE.

never in my life did i ever think of anyone taking the p@@@ out of me would be so rewarding:), i can laugh now, but wasnt laughing then i can assure you,,,, i live in edinburgh,, if anyone had have stuck a pin in me, im sure i would have finished up in manchester, aye, in record time:),,,

THANK GOD THATS OVER NOW,,,

BEST REGARDS

jimmyw123 in reply to

well you got to laugh at times,,,,,but it was really bad,

im now away to empty this leg bag, as im walking like john wayne again lol:)

good on you jimmy you still have a wicked sense of humour my plumbing (as I call all my urine collecting stuff) is not quite as invasive as yours, I can still use a conveen (they often call these external catheters) this is then fed into a smaller leg bag (used for when I am getting around) this in turn is hooked up to a nightbag at night and that is where the fun begins all the various stages rely on compression fitting which can and often does go awry not that often but enough to get me to try and find a better alternative as the leg bag comes away from the night one or it does not drain in sequence either causing the leg bag to overfill and pull my conveen of or to detach itself from its night time friend to leave a pool of urine on the floor. So when I found a suitable alternative my primary care provider just passed the buck along to the incontinence nurse whose curt reply was you managed the old system for X number of years why change now. In other words despite the new system being a huge saving on the NHS and kinder on my skin they will not change it.

jimmyw123 in reply to

i know ant, its often no joke, very awkward and uncomfortable, ive had the night bag come away from the leg bag during the night, the mattress soaked,,,,it really is horrible,,,, between the oxygen, the catheter, having to sleep sitting up, im lying there like an egyptian mummy:), cant toss or turn.

i know the external ones you mean, as you say, still fun and games at night. its crazy when they wont change yours to suit you, thats the nhs for you [mind you were grateful for them at times]

i was at the urology just the other week, and asked if anything could be done, without any compassion in the least "no, it will be on for life now" that was my answer.it actually felled me quite a bit, i then asked if a suprapubic would be better,,," no , we wont risk an aenasthetic" i dont believe that for one minute,, that just means "we dont want to go to the bother",,,,and off course,, costs!!!!

anyway ant, i hope you can get this "suitable alternative" maybe keep fighting them,, good luck,, kindest regards jimmy

p,s just passing thoughts [not passing urine lol],, i might have been better phoning a plumber!!!!:)

in reply tojimmyw123

Sounds as if you might have been better off Jimmy have you thought of self cauterization as coloplast does a very good range here. I was just thinking of emergency use to avoid the very painful situation you found yourself in. From what I can make out the self catheter can be used in an emergency while waiting for the medics or the nurse.

coloplast.co.uk/Global/Cont... hope you stay well and have no further need of a mea west.

in reply to

and you fill me with envy half sitting was the only way I used to be able to sleep until the PR people got there hooks on me and eventually got me sleeping on my right side so I could do postural drainage from my left lung but I must not complain as what comes up first thing in the morning never stops short of amazement I never realized I had so much gunge in my lung.

in reply to

sadly Jimmy we live in a world where male dummy's are not made (thinking of resusie Anne here) but I am sure either a dish y female nurse can instruct you on how to self catheterize. And I doubt it is your fused spine is doing this I have a wonky one too all my thoracic vertebrae are fused bar two one above and one below meaning I have a completely ruptured disk trapping the spinal cord entirely making me doubly incontinent at times. Just get the sample and see your nurse or doctor and fingers crossed you have a solution to a painful situation

jimmyw123 profile image
jimmyw123 in reply to

good point ant, big thanks, will check this out..., strange thing is no one has mentioned self catheterisation to me, its possibly my fused spine thats stopping this. but i think i could manage it,,,, but could i practice on someone else first lol:),,, thanks ant,,, regards jimmy

Good grief jimmy, you don't do things by half do you! What a relief for you! I was reminded of when Pete had a TURPS op (prostate) and had a catheter fitted. He was told to drink lots so he did. The problem was he was not passing urine but his bladder was filling up nicely. He was also in terrible, terrible pain and I had to dial 999 to get an ambulance to take him back to hospital. It turned out he had blood clots blocking the catheter tube. I have never seen Pete in so much pain so he would sympathise with you. Take care and wishing you well. xxxxx

jimmyw123 profile image
jimmyw123 in reply tosassy59

hi sassy, on the serious side, i think someone would either need to go through this, or witness it, its the worst pain ive ever went through anyway.

i had the turp op, and same thing happened to me, but i was in a hospital then, the op. was in fact a waste of time, as it materialized my bladder was "in effect" paralysed due to my spinal probs.,

,lucky white heather!!!,, jimmy:)

Sorry to hear of your problem just recently Jimmy, people don't realise the effects of bladder retention on the body. I was reading somewhere about how it's a common occurrence in people with lung conditions. See you did not lose your sense of humour but I bet it was scary at the time. Good job you kept your wits about you and phoned for paramedic help. Take care and Keep well.

jimmyw123 profile image
jimmyw123 in reply tokatieoxo60

yes katie, but i should have phoned much earlier, i thought [stupidly] it would have unblocked itself,,,,stubborn old git me ha ha,, but i learned a severe lesson this time,, never mind were flowing fine now:).. best regards ,,",long may the flow go:)" kindest thoughts katie, take care,,,, jimmy

Omg jimmy what an experience. As you are end stage don't you have a number you can call whereby you can get immediate help and advice without having to call an ambulance? Do you get nurses coming to visit or is there no one keeping an eye on you? Living on your own must make you feel very vulnerable unless you have outside help.

Glad to see you have kept your sense of humour :) x

hi cough, i get a carer each morning , its supposed to be 45 mins,, its about 10!!!,,,, anyway, fun and games tomorrow,, bath morning [a bath in record time :)] the district nurse calls in sometimes,

i do have the emergency number of my surgery, and an alarm system installed in the house from the council, which i did call,,,, the ambulance and that nurse came at the same time, but at that time, every minute felt like an hour, brrr every time i think of it ,, nightmare stuff,,,,,

i mean,, lets be honest,, no breath no live:) no pee no live:),, but,,,,,

im breathing [of a sort] peeing [of a sort],, but the main thing is im living [of a sort] lol,, to the fullest i can as well :)

thats the bit n,t,b,, i was in that much of a state, i never asked, friends and relatives have asked me that same question,,but really i was just semi-concious when at its worst, but if i can remember right, someone said something about "blocked with debris" ,, youd think it was a blinken airoplane crash:),,,,but seriously i will keep my eye on this,as there is often "gunge" and tiny clots of blood in the outside tube,, when i asked about this before they said it was normal!!!, ,,thanks n,t,b. take care now,, regards jimmy xx

needtobreathe profile image
needtobreathe in reply tojimmyw123

I asked because I have a cousin who had a kidney transplant and she had this problem, the staff at the hospital always checked her tube for debris because of the damage a blocked one can cause. It's extremely important to monitor it.. You should have been expertly advised when they put the catheter in. Keep well will be thinking about you sending healing. P x

jimmyw123 profile image
jimmyw123 in reply toneedtobreathe

hi n.t,b , believe it or not,, i only have one kidney, i think this was one one of the reasons [amongst others] why they took me in for observation,, the bladder was so over loaded, seemingly it can flow back into the kidney, then cause very bad probs.

this "debris" thing,,,, i have often seen small blood clots and gunge in the tube,i had a blockage once after a turp op. but that was in hospital,,,these wee clots and gunge often appear when i have a new catheter fitted , i can only imagine this must disturb the inside of the bladder,,,,it can cause slight discomfort for a couple of days,,,like kinda cramps inside you etc.

but this catheter that had blocked had been in a few weeks with no problem. so really i dont know what caused this "debris"

you are very right, very extremely important to keep checking it, ,, really you get used to the amount that should be in the bag and the colour of the tube etc,, but that day there was nothing in the bag, so i really should have phoned earlier [my fault, really]

but as far as being expertly advised,, well!!!

not really...but will be asking more questions in future,,

district nurse comes in, catheter fitted in, district nurse out!!!, although they are very nice, it look like that they just dont have time. i do believe this.

sorry to go on,, but one time they sent a nurse 8am, it was obvious she didnt have a clue,, she took the old catheter out,, then couldnt fit the new one in!!!,,,then told me to go to the western general hosp,, where they would be expecting me? i traveled about the 8 miles there, went to urology, all depts, i was there , getting worse by the minute again, over an hour,,,by this time it was afternoon,, no one knew anything about me,, then went into serious retention, agony again, they got a porter to take me in a wheelchair up to the A. and E,!!!! ,,THEN,, once i was in the in the A. and E., ,, NOW YOUR NOT GOING TO BELIEVE THIS,,, they told me to" hang on best you can",, "were getting a doctor up from the urology in a few mins!!!!"..,i had just spent an hour there, in the urology pleading for help!!!!,, crazy.

same again 2 litrs approx, and 24 hours in observation,, like a blinken jail sentence:)..

sorry for going on n,t,b, but just thought i would tell you that one,,,

ohhh to pee normal ha ha ha,,:),

you take care now n,t,b ,, and keep well,, regards,,jimmy xxxx
