Hi Pulmonary rehab is really good it will help to improve your overall strength and lung function. they will also have half hour talks where you can ask questions about your condition. Each talk will be about something that will support your condition.

Sorry but pulmonary rehab WILL NOT improve one's lung function; It will help one learn how to cope better with the lung function they have. Learning how to do more with less.

To get yourself fitter, learn coping strategies and meet other people who are in the same boat as you. It was the best thing I did since being diagnosed! Go for it, it's worth putting the time in. Good luck!

Sorry to sound abrupt. Don't ask questions ..go for it..it costs nothing and you will meet people in the same situation as yourself. Xx

Hello JuniorGordon. Pulmonary rehab will help you understand & manage your condition. It will help you to improve your strength, fitness & stamina therefore enhancing your quality of life & self esteem. It is the best thing you can do, after giving up smoking.

Best wishes

Jo :-)

Just a small test. Look through previous posts, use the search facility if necessary, for PR or Pulmonary rehab. Read the posts. Anyone there said it was their downfall, worse thing they ever did in their life...I don't think you will find that. For most people, PR is really life changing. Now doing my second...the first was quite a few years ago. It was like a second Christmas when I received the phone call to say I could go on the next one. Yesterday, I cut and trimmed my lawn....the first time for 3 years....I've played piggy back with my 2 year old grandson...until the little sod dropped me. Being serious, I went first time thinking "I'll humour them. Go for a few days and then just disappear"....but it was damn addictive. Give it a go, have a look at it, you will meet people struggling more than you but giving it their all.

Good Morning! My husband has been on two pulmonary rehab classes and I firmly believe they saved his life!!

The course itself is usually 6-8 weeks long, two sessions a week, two hours long. Each session is one hour monitored exercise and one hour information. One of the main aims is to increase fitness levels - by doing so you are able to do more. It honestly changed my husbands life.

In our area you need to be referred to the course but after two years you can self refer to go again.

There is usually an assessment prior to starting which includes a six minute walk test. This is not a fail or pass - it is to assess your fitness at the beginning - the test is repeated at the end to show the improvement. My husband completed his last course in October last year. During the assessment in the walking test it was realised that his sats were falling below 88 during exercise so he was given oxygen to exercise with . He uses it now if we are going to a big shopping centre etc. and on the new treadmill he has just bought.

You will learn all about your condition, all about your medications, what your doctors should be doing etc. AND you will meet other people with similar conditions. Some will look much healthier than you and others will look much worse but it shows you that you are not the only person. My husband made a lovely group of friends and they meet once or twice a month and try to attend an exercise class (or just have a cup of tea!) It also introduced him to the local Breath Easy group which he now attends.

I hope that you have been referred - such a positive experience and if not - go and ask to be referred. You may need to ask a few times - I was told my husband was too well to go on the course to start with! Take care, TAD xx

Hi Junior Gordon, I start my PR in two weeks time and am really looking forward to it, I've heard such good things about how much it helps to get the advice and do the exercises and meet other people who are in the same position. So I think you should do it just for the experience, you never know, you may really enjoy it. Take care. Lizzy.

It's fun and you will make a lot of new friends with similar problems. Your health will improve and you will be amazed at how much more you can manage as the weeks go on.

Do go to rehab and don't forget to enquire whether there is a follow-up class. This requires referral from rehab team. if it is available it will probably cost around £2.00 per weekly session. Money well spent.. Good Luck.

I just use my treadmill. Don't drive anymore so this is something I can do everyday. IT DOES help. I go very slow and last for about 15-20 min. It helps a lot. Hard to do, but my doctor says "the treadmill and 02 therapy keep me vertical..
