Hi Scooby, Glad to hear the GP is sending you for an xray (I guess that what you mean!). Hope you start to feel better very soon. TAD xx

Oh scooby, I hope you're referred to a consultant rather than a GP, as consultants are specialists in their fields. They are used to see all sortsof condition, but just in their field. while a GP has general knowledge. it would be good to ask your GP and say that on the strength of the last bout, you would like to be referred to a consultant.

I had a GP once who told me, "What can a consultant do that I can't do?" Well i did insist. There was a lot more that he did. he knew the tests to be done, and not a simple Xray. Xrays show some of the inside of the lungs. But a sputum sample, scrutinized by a microbiologist determines if you have a bug and which one. This is vital for the detection of an infection and its treatment. Ask to be referred to a consultant. A GP nowadays, is "a hub". it's to hom you go for referral, that's his job.

I had heaps of xrays over the years which came back 'clear' it was only after the last chest infection that GP sent me for a CT scan, which showed severe emphysema.... please ask for a CT scan.

Does it sound like that's what I have got?..is that how you were then?

Will have to look this up as don't know what emphysema is.

Thanks

I cannot say if you have this, and didn't mean to scare you, all I am saying is that persistent infections should be looked into deeper, it could be nothing, but xrays only show so much. xx

Oh right ok,thank you. I have been to drs so many times it's ridiculous considering how bad I've been they should have sent me before I am also asthmatic and yes unfortunately I smoke but am managing to cut down at least.

I ditto what Kad says.

It was the same for me, loads of x-rays that were 'clear' over 4-5 years. Finally got the CT scan my GP had requested & it showed everything

You need a CT scan for a proper diagnosis.

I'm lucky though, no actual disease (apart from asthma which we already knew about)so I hope the best for you too. Good luck

Perhaps you need a CPap machine, this stops me waking in the night.

I was told by my GP that he will put me on to a chest specialist over 2 weeks ago not heard a thing yet. My breathing has got worse over the last 18 months and the last chest xray I had was in 2010. It was not until after many visits I got a spiro test at the doctors who told me I have Restrictive Lung Disease 53% lung function. (They have said my breathing was my heart problem all along) I hope that when I do eventually see the specialist he will help with my gasping for breath at night at sleep too.

I hope all goes well for you scooby.

Be well

Hi Scooby,

When I was finally diagnosed with Bronc and Ashma last March (2012) hubby and I thought yippee the right help is on it's way after years of misdiagnosis. We have learnt over the last months that it takes time to get the right medication, as each person seems to have different problems with their disease. I now give myself permission to have days when the sofa, nebuliser and a fluffy blanket are my top priority. I've stopped fretting that I can't do what I used to and enjoy the days when I feel brighter. Hang on in there hospitals, seem to run on their own time (at least 2 months slower than the rest of us). Hope you have more success with your diagnosis in the new year.

Sue
