Hi guys could you tell me if I should have more tests for copd I have been diagnosed on a spirometer test only how do I know what stage imat
Hi jeanielee. I was only diagnosed with copd from a spirometry test and blood gasses done once yearly. On reading the NICE guidelines it states that a diagnosis of copd shouldn't be reached without a chest x-ray and if it is inconclusive, a CT scan as well. I was told lots of times by my doctor that I didn't need a chest x-ray and eventually I got one doctor to refer me. Had it a couple of weeks ago and copd is confirmed. Ask for one and quote the NICE guidelines at them. As for the stage you are at - ask them! And ask for your FEV1 result. Mine is FEV1 66 which means I am just in the moderate stage from mild and 66% out of 100% is my lung function. Will try and find the NICE guidelines for you and put the link on here. x
Thanks for your reply I clearly need to do some research.
Hi Jeannie you should have a x-ray spirometer test just give the rate at wich you lungs function. Once you have had this ask at what level you are at. Hope this helps. Rose
Thank you, back to the docs armed with all my new info.
Yes, I agree with others. You need to load yourself with info otherwise it's too easy for them to dismiss you. CT scan would confirm Bronchiectasis and chest X-ray MAY confirm COPD but the reporting on X-rays can be unreliable I've found. Our senior partner said they are only used as a guide! Also make sure you have the right medication.
You should not mess about as early diagnosis is important. You sound very much like me but as yet I have not had a final diagnosis. In fact had I accepted my GP's opinion that it was Pleural Plaques and nothing to worry about about I would not be as far forward as I am. X-Ray alone may not be sufficient you may need a CT scan. I am fully convinced that had I not been so persistent I would not as yet have seen a consultant. Incidentally I am 7 years of age living in a COPD hotspot. So see your GP and be persistent.
Sorry 72 years of age
Hi jeanielee. Tell your doctor you want to be referred to a pulmonary consultant. The consultant will give you a lot more relevant tests and also be able to prescribe proper medicines for you.
Thanks puff I'm definitely going to put my foot down fed up of being fobbed off.i was wondering if you or anyone else have tried the oxygen machines you can buy eg airnergy or nebulisers
