I am a very fit, slim 52 year old woman. Never smoked, low cholesterol, low blood pressure and its not in the family. I have had flu and chest infection for 4 weeks and wonder if this has caused it.

It's possible you have a clotting disorder, e.g., "thick blood". Generally there are no symptoms until you get a clot somewhere.
Why not give the BLF a ring this morning I am sure they will be able to help you. Click on the red balloon at the top of the page for the number.
polly xx
I was diagnosed with bi-pulmonary clots a few years ago. I was amazed at this diagnosis because I was up and about. Usually people who have this are fit for bed only.
I was taking the tummy injections like a good girl and having my I&R measured weekly and we know the dangers of thinning the blood too much!! When a Professor of medicine doubted the diagnosis and I had a proper scan which proved negative. Check everything twice is my advice
I had the first scan in QAH Portsmouth. I had been admitted the previous night with the symptoms you describe. I was discharged with Cyclax injections to take daily. I was then going for another op on my knee when the surgeon wanted the diagnosis double checked. I had the second scan done in Spire hospital Havant where my lungs were seen to be clear with just a case of mild/mod copd
Hi s1239, Only just read your post, But some one mentioned thick blood, I have anti thrombin 3 deficiency, It is hereditary .
Hi They don't test my blood until the course of Warfarin is finished. It's 6 months in UK which I think is too long. They don't scan you again in the UK they just assume the clots have gone after 6 months. My blood will be tested after 6 months to see if I have any blood conditions.
Has anyone drunk alcohol on Warfarin. It's coming Xmas and I'm going to have a really miserable one if I can't drink. Already booked on several parties before I got diagnosed with this don't feel like going to any now if I can't drink.
For Warfarin interactions go here: nhs.uk/Conditions/Anticoagu...
A friend of mine on warfarin does take a glass of wine on occasion, but it really is infrequent and usually only 1 glass. But for you it would also depend on the other medications you are prescribed and for that guidance I would check with your own GP.
Lung disease may come about by a number of things, passive smoking, exposure to other toxins on a regular basis, through work, where you live, pre restrictions on spraying crops etc. building industry, baking, pottery glaze making, varnishes etc etc. You would have to discuss with your consultant about what the possible causes may be to learn how best you can avoid these in the future.
As suggested do phone the helpline on normal working week days 10 am to 5pm, click red balloon top right for the contact number.
There are lifestyle adjustments we all make or choose to make, I tend to avoid large gatherings during the winter months because of the increased risk of exposure to the bugs which can easily set us up for a lung infection which may lead to further lung damage. Having said that I do meet with other lung patients for a Christmas lunch celebration in a public restaurant. The best thing we can all do is help keep our immune system boosted to good levels by eating a good diet, getting enough sleep and regular exercise.
Hope you find you are feeling much better real soon.
Best wishes BC
