Has anyone taken relvar ellipta as an inhaler 1 inhalation a day for Ashma . I have had allot of trials with inhalers but keep getting oral thrush no matter how good my oral hygiene is . The Dr at the Ashma clinic has changed me to this but it’s scarily that one of the side effects is pneumonia 1 inhalation 10 .

Any advice on side effects or is it a good inhaler ?

Hi Julesc12

Yep.. I’ve been on the high dose Relvar inhaler for several years now and I love the once daily dose regime.

I occasionally get thrush but that seems to coincide with a flare and the need for oral pred so I don’t necessarily blame the Relvar.

I know that pneumonia is quoted as a side effect but I’ve never had any problems with this.

Give it a go and see how you get on! Fingers crossed you get on well with it!

Good Luck 🤞🍀🍀

What does your GP or respiratory nurse say about the thrush? I was prescribed antifungal when I had it and advised to cut sugar and eat live yogurt - which I still do years later

I’m told to rinse and gargle and clean my teeth after every use of my inhaler , also gargle with salt , eat live yogurt, I do all of these , somehow my body won’t tolerate steroids or fomotorol so am trying this as no formoterol and only 1 puff a day instead of 4

I wonder if live apple cider vinegar regularly would help 🤔 if it were me I'd try it - mainly because getting to my GP practice is nigh on impossible and because I'm severely allergic to mould so the first sign of it in my home & I spray with white vinegar which kills it dead. The cutting out of sugar definitely worked in clearing my whole system of thrush and candida at the time (when I had a great GP practice). Good luck Julesc12, hope you find something that works (I even gargle before inhaling too in the assumption it'll dilute the medication when it hits my throat. Perhaps mad but I so don't want thrush again). P

Hi

I know it sounds very random but I always have a cup of coffee after my daily inhaled steroid. Coffee is a mild antibacterial agent. Not saying it would work any better than the usual treatments but I used to have a GP who swore by it!

Also I’m always quite happy to have an excuse for a coffee!!👍😂

Good Luck 🤞

Yep. I developed asthma at the sge of 70 in 2023. It was caused by a drug called finasteride, although it took me several months to make the connection. Finasteride is used to treat enlarged prostate and pattern baldness. The asthma progressed to very severe, and I thought I was going to pass out several times. The Salamol inhaler I was taking provided only weak, temporary relief, and I ended up using it every half hour.

The doctor put me on Relvar and it was a godsend. Takes a few days to start working fully, and you have to swill your mouth with water after using it, to try to prevent thrush. After being on it for a few months, I started researching the connection between finasteride and asthma, and found several posters on Reddit saying that the drug had made them breathless. There's nothing in the side effects section of the leaflet about this. I stopped the finasteride, and within a few weeks, I stopped taking Relvar. I'm now back to normal.

The doctor said it must have been a rare bad reaction, but I think it may be much more common than they realise. Finasteride has recently been shown to have other adverse serious side effects, including suicidal thoughts.

Wow , these drugs help one thing and created other issues all of them , I try to take the minimum i can and look after myself . Good luck 🤞 with it and thank you for your reply

Gosh, weird that you've mentioned this drug KenFine. I was at the tragic heart-rending funeral of very loved, well balanced, happy & successful lad with a glowing future, complete and utter shock. He began taking it 2-3 weeks (prescription drug but bought on the internet after filling in a simple form before being hit with those thoughts in the wee small hours). The conclusion is that drug. His father, uncles & grandpa all bald from a very young age & his gorgeous curls were going the same way.

No, he/she is saying that finasteride was responsible for his death. Not inhaler medication.
