I have the same type of Asthma and I get a flare up in cold weather or after an infection. Sometimes it just flares up for no apparent reason. I find that if I immediately up my symbicort from 1 puff twice a day to two puffs three times a day it helps. Usually takes at least three weeks for cough to settle. Night time is difficult as I cough and don’t get much sleep after 2.00am I also use a nasal, spray and that helps a bit with the phlegm at back of throat. It’s a very strange type of asthma and I generally find a lack of understanding about it. Peak flow doesn’t vary much even when I have a flare up but I check it just in case.
I have this too and yes, no one seems to understand it. It took years for me to get diagnosed with it in the first place.
OP, I just have to increase my steroid to shorten the flare up. I've also started taking a mask with me now it's cold. I've only had to use it twice, but if I pop that on the second I realise there's an issue it prevents me from coughing for hours by giving me warm air to breathe. Of course I get funny looks and rude comments because I'm wearing a mask, but at least I'm not coughing!!
Firstly I've been wearing a Buff (brand name) in cold weather since 2013 (when I joined this forum and someone told me about them). It's a fine jersey type knit, wear around my neck and pull it up over my nose & mouth just before I go outside., marvellous although I wear a kids size as I've a small head & they don't slip down. Personally I prefer natural fibres so I get fine Merino wool or bamboo. I've several and wouldn't be without them, they're treated so moisture wicks away so they don't end up a soggy mess - but anything is better than nothing to cover yr airways.
Secondly being a nose breather helps. The cold damp air has further to travel so warms a little on the way to the lungs.
Thirdly I use pursed lip breathing when a bit breathless, that's slowly & deeply in through the nose & out slowly through pursed lips
PS to spockman ..... I've been on Fostair MDI (spray type rather than powder) and its a MART inhaler (MART Maintenence And Reliever Therapy) which suits me very well as you can alter the doses as & when needed on MART regime which also suits me very well
I have cough varient Asthma too, with reflux, and my respiratory consultant has changed several things for me. First, I take 10 mls of Gaviscon Advance before bed. I've also stopped eating and drinking anything with sugar in it and it's made a tremendous difference to the reflux and therefore to the asthma. Secondly I've changed all my inhalers to Ciclesonide (Alvesco) and a separate inhaler of Formoterol, as combined inhalers made me cough more. I have an additional rescue inhaler of Salbutamol. I take an antihistamine every day, and use a Neilmed sinus rinse and a Mometasone Furoate nasal spray each day. This lot has all helped me, but you obviously have to take everyone's advice and see what suits you. Asthma isn't a one size fits all condition.
