New to this site. My son as just be diagnose with cough variant asthma after months of coughing last year which at the time I was told it wasn't asthma but croup, dry cough, laryngitis and whooping cough. So now hes on inhaler preventer and reliever 120mg allergy tablet, singular and nasal spray and its been about 10 wks and he is still coughing all day and night all I'm told is to wait they are not a miracle tablet or inhaler telling me they not I have to watch him coughing till vomiting sometimes. He's up most of the night coughing can anyone help I don't know where to turn, he's be asthmatic since 12 mths old but I was told he had grown out of it I don't think he had they just kept telling me croup for about 5 years I've changed doctors and finally got a diagnoses but treatment just not working like it use to for classic asthma at my wits end.

Well I have bags of experience with asthma. The trick is to do loud sharp inhales through the nose stead of through the mouth as in attack. This trick stopped my asthma, probably for ever. Any wheezing due to pollen in these days in July is turned off. Search for Strelnikova exersise for asthma on the internet..

I assume you have seen a consultant somewhere in all these different diagnoses. If not, you need to see one and urgently. Your other best source of advice is the nurse at Asthma UK 0300 222 5800 Mon - Fri; 9 - 5. These nurses really know their stuff.

The only other point I make, very tentatively, is there is a very understandable note of panic in your post. If you can find a way to be quite calm and transfer that calmness and confidence to your son, he may sleep a bit better. I know it seems impossible, but if you can do it, I think it will help.

Thankyou for taking the time to massage back, I do my best to stay calm just angry with GP that are treating it like it a throat clearing cough it's not, the cough my son has is a very dry hacking one that's continues with very few breaks between them, the last time me son see a consultant was 12 year ago when he was 1 he was diagnosed with classic asthma and put on preventer and reliever inhaler's that done the trick later on singular tablet added in i self managed it then under the guidance of respiratory nurse no need for gp. But this asthma is different harder to control all this medication seem to have done very little if anything. Il give asthma uk a ring and see what they say.

thanks again for your time

Doctor only put him on prednisone for 3 days he still coughed. Thankyou for taking the time to reply do you have experience with cough variant asthma? I can't seem to find much research and asthma nurse seem to know less than I do.

It's essentially asthma where the only symptom is cough. There are many other factors that can cause chronic cough of which asthma is one. It might be worth asking the GP for a 7 day course of Prednisolone to see if that clears it up. Assuming his nose isn't constantly running because of hay fever (or his hay fever if he has it is totally out of control) I would suggest asking for a referral to an asthma specialist.

They have referred him to respiratory about a month ago and I was told last week the hospital have lost the referral 😠 so its been sent again. He as no running of the nose but itchy throat out of breath, chest pain that come mainly at night. Any amount of exercising courses the tag to pull in. I don't know if upping preventer inhaler from 2 puffs twice a day to 3 would help he on clenil 100mg but I haven't been told anything lm totally alone with this no matter how many times I go back to go I feel like I'm wasting their time.
