hi, I’ve posted before discussing on going chest infections, repetitive doses of antibiotics and steroids etc- jts been a real struggle to get gp and asthma nurse to listen to me and still no respiratory referral despite having multiple chest infection all requiring meds in a short period of time. My asthma was ok for a lot of July and all of august, up until I got another chest infection nearly 2 weeks ago. I was prescribed antibiotics and steroids yet again and sent on my way, didn’t shift it so a second course was prescribed of both. There was an overlap where there was no antibiotics and just steroids (2 days) during them 2 days & then the current days on the new prescription I’ve been vomiting, getting very nauseous and sweaty & really bad heartburn which in turn makes me cough and will also cause me to vomit. I cannot carry on like this but I also need to try get rid of this sucky chest. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar and what the treatment plan was in that instance?

I was prescribed Steroids which happened to be Prednisolone for a problem and was given Omeprazole which is a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) which reduces acid output to protect my stomach especially when taking steroids. I took the Omeprazole a good 1/2 prior to the steroids which I took with or just after food.

It may be a good Idea to speak to your GP about the effect of steroids on your stomach as the symptoms you describe are classic without a PPI.

I hope you can get some relief going forward if in the same situation again.

Ahh I’m already on omeprazole anyway prior to being on the steroids I completely forgot to mention it🙈 I was too busy focusing on my new meds that I keep getting prescribed instead of focusing on my regular daily meds. Not sure if I can edit the post but I take omeprazole, fexofenadine & carbocistine daily. I Have to time the omeprazole around my carbocistine as i cant Have them too close together. I will ask if they could possible up the dose or if there is an alternative if this isn’t being effective.

Very understandable given your meds. Omeprazole is often increased when symptoms flare so may be an option in your case. I hope you find a solution as what you described is awful and hard to function with.

I was like that for a long time until I was started on Nucula injections. New joyful life now. Discus with your consultant if you qualify for the nucula monthly injection. Hope this is helpful and that you recover soon. Best Joseph

It may be worth talking with the Asthma UK nurses on the helpline, 0300 222 5800. Mon - Friday, office hours. It's clear that you're struggling and the helpline can help with asserting what treatments and referrals you can request and expect.

Repeated antibiotics and Prednisolone that aren't addressing ongoing asthma symptoms and chest infections are a huge red flag for a treatment review and referral to a specialist. Half the battle is knowing how to advocate for oneself and what you have a right to. You certainly shouldn't be struggling with so many symptoms and side effects.

Good luck and keep us posted.

When the antibiotics finish this time if it has not cleared you need to get your GP or asthma nurse to send a sputum sample, this will tell them what antibiotics will actually clear it. Regarding a referral to a specialist they normally have a protocol to follow and if as you say its only unstable due to a current infection this would not normally result in a referral.
