They are most common in warm, damp, dark areas where dust containing skin scales gathers. These areas include pillows, mattresses, carpets, soft furnishings, soft toys and even clothing. The mites are harmless to most of us, but they can cause allergic symptoms in some people.portsmouth.gov.uk › ...

House dust mites - Portsmouth City Council

Hi there, I just googled dust mites UK, lots of info comes up. The above was one.

I see you're in Spain though so perhaps a little different there.

I live in southern England , a bit obsessive I suppose but I have no less than three mattress covers which I can wash, same with pillow cases.

A few years ago I invested in a Dyson cordless vacuum reccomended where pets live, the dust container. I vacuum my bedroom more than any other rooms was slightly horrified that the vac container always contains white/grayish powder. It's dry skin which any dust mites thrive on. Yuk I know. I've no curtains in my home, only shutters which I damp dust regularly.

After looking up dust mites (I believe many asthmatics can have varying degrees of allergy to dust mite but only recently read here that some are also allergic to actual dust which can also contain pollens - see runcyclexsli's recent post). I shall wash all my mattress covers and get the duvet dry cleaned (which has two covers on it)!

A doctor once told me that dust mite activity is worst in November in UK. I'm wondering if that's when humidity in the home is worse? Looking forward to other replies

PS I also wash the filters in my vacuum regularly (dry them on radiator or sunshine) and damp dust the interior of the little container

All horizontal surfaces and all fabrics (upholstery, curtains etc). In clean rooms they do not use vacuums -- it's all wet mopping with microfiber (cotton-freen) mops. Which means there must be no carpets and no fabrics anywhere (including furniture).
